Warning! Spoilers ahead for Star Wars: High Republic # 4 by Cavan Scott and Ario Anindito

In the latest issue of Marvel Comics’ Star Wars: the high republic, one of the strongest teachers in the Jedi Order willingly opened himself up to the corruption of the dark side. During this era, which takes place 200 years before the events of the Skywalker saga, the Great Republic and the Jedi find themselves in a period of great peace and expansion in the Outer Rim. However, new threats are emerging, such as the marauder Nihil and the dark side plant creatures known as Drengir. Similarly, a small team of Jedi have encountered the ancient monsters and believe that one of their own had fallen under their influence when Jedi Master Sskeer apparently betrayed them. However, it is revealed that there is more darkness within Sskeer than meets the eye.

In Star Wars: The High Republic # 4 by writer Cavan Scott with art by Anindito Ario, Jedi Marshal Avar Kriss, Jedi Ceret and Master Sskeer’s former apprentice Keeve Trennis have been captured by the Drengir, who have apparently corrupted Sskeer in his hive mind, giving him a new plant arm to replace the limb you lost in a recent battle. Since the first issue of the series, Sskeer has been spiraling, having lost his connection to the Force, so it makes some sense as to why he would be an easier target for the Drengir’s corruption than his fellow Jedi.

Master Sskeer also reveals the history of the Drengir, who were once allies of the Sith Lords (though they were eventually betrayed and imprisoned by the Sith). It was only due to the unintended actions of past Jedi that they have now been unleashed to cause new chaos and darkness throughout the galaxy. However, it is also revealed that the Trandoshan Jedi Master actually opened himself willingly to the power of the dark side of the Drengir, believing it to be strong enough to withstand the creatures’ power and know their weaknesses. Surprisingly, he actually manages to fight long enough to save his allies and fight monsters from the dark side.

However, while Sskeer’s secret gamble ended up paying off, it is not without cost. Despite being freed from the control of the Drengir, the Jedi Master is still connected to them, and now resists their constant attraction to embrace the dark side. Even in this very trouble, Jedi Knight Keeve Trennis has to remind him that he is a Jedi, helping him keep his own aggression and darkness under control during an interrogation.

It’s incredibly interesting that the High Republic now has a Jedi who is constantly battling an outside influence that continually tries to bring out the worst and darkest parts of himself, while still trying to corrupt him with the power of the dark side of the Force. . Hopefully, Master Sskeer will be strong enough to continue to resist the lasting influence of the Drengir or he will have his fellow Jedi to help him climb out of the abyss in future editions of Star Wars: the high republic from Marvel Comics.
