How long was Bucky in Wakanda?

Falcon & Winter Soldier explores how Bucky’s time in Wakanda shaped him. How long were you in Wakanda, especially outside of cryogenesis?

Warning! Spoilers for The Falcon and The Winter Solider below.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has cemented how ingrained Wakanda is in Bucky, raising the question of how long Bucky was in Wakanda prior to the events of Avengers: Infinity War. In recent years, Wakanda has become a part of who Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) is as a person, and the show even reveals that he is fluent in Wakandan. That, combined with a flashback sequence and the knowledge that Bucky had apparently forged close ties with some of the people of Wakanda, indicated that he was there longer than previously thought.

Captain America: Civil WarThe post-credits scene sees Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) leaving Bucky in Wakanda. The decision was made that Shuri (Letitia Wright) and the advanced technology at his fingertips is Bucky’s only hope of getting the Winter Soldier programming out of his head. But he decides that it is better to return to cryogenic sleep while Shuri works. The next time Steve and the audience see Bucky he’s in a Black Panther post-credits scene. He lives in a simple cabin and does housework, which shows that he has deeply connected with Wakanda in his time there.

Like WandaVision before that, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has done an impressive job of linking the series to Marvel’s past and future franchises. It has been constantly revealed that Wakanda plays an important role in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier by showing audiences that Bucky has a stronger connection to Wakanda than previously revealed. Not only did he mention to his psychiatrist that living in Wakanda was the only time in 90 years that he had known peace, but it became ingrained enough in the culture to be able to speak the language fluently, suggesting that he was there a considerable amount of time and awake outside of cryogenesis. Turns out, Bucky was in Wakanda for two years.

Bucky in Wakanda in Falcon and Winter Soldier Episode 4

Civil war took place in 2016, which is also when Bucky arrived in Wakanda. He and Cap met at Avengers: Infinity War, and that took place in 2018. Since Bucky was one of the unlucky ones dusted by Thanos’s Snap, he was absent for five years. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier takes place six months after Bucky and half the population returned in the Blip. By the time audiences see Bucky again on the Marvel series, he’s already in America. While the timeline is never clearly established, it’s safe to assume that Bucky was in Wakanda from 2016 to 2018, and that he was awake for a good chunk of those two years.

Bucky had been brainwashed for decades as the Winter Soldier. Episode 4, “The Whole World Is Watching,” showed a flashback in which Ayo from Dora Milaje worked with Bucky to test the success of the deprogramming efforts. After that, his time in Wakanda was the first time in years that he regained his own mind. Having such a clear mind gave Bucky the opportunity to become one with the land and the culture. As it was the first place where he was truly free, Wakanda became his home. He was given the nickname White Wolf, proving that he became an honorary Wakandan in his time there. Speaking Wakanda fluently is just the tip of the iceberg of Bucky’s love for Wakanda, proving how difficult the decision to betray Wakanda by breaking Zemo out of prison must have been for him. The rest of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier He will likely continue to explore his connection to the country and how he will shape Bucky’s future in the MCU.
