Wynonna Earp closes her career with Waverly and Nicole’s wedding … but not without damn magical shenanigans. Here’s a summary full of spoilers.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Wynonna Earp Season 4, episode 12, “Old Souls”, which aired on Friday on Syfy.
While Waverly Earp and Nicole Haught have been a serious couple since the beginning of Wynonna Earp, the couple finally takes their relationship to the next level in the possible series finale with a long-awaited wedding ceremony. And with love in the air, the shows close on an uplifting note for the main characters, as Wynonna, Doc Holliday, and Jeremy Chetri each have their own happy endings, with some expected supernatural shenanigans, of course.
While Purgatory has long been a cursed place, with previous episodes in season 4 showing the origins of the city’s Halloween curse, the series finale reveals that weddings taking place in the city are a equally horrible affair. A flashback shows a bride hacking the rest of her wedding party to death before committing suicide, with an unconscious Waverly buying the killer woman’s wedding dress for her impending nuptials, unaware of her bloody history. Luckily for Waverly, the cursed dress doesn’t end up haunting her, but her older sister, Wynonna.

Trying on her sister’s dress on a lark, Wynonna finds she can’t take it off now, and the woman who sold it to Waverly is a literal witch. As Wynonna scrambles to find a way to remove her dress and remove the curse, she discovers that Doc is seriously considering leaving town now that the vampire curse has finally been removed. Wynonna intercepts him, and the two have a heartfelt conversation about their on-and-off romance. When Wynonna and Doc finally reconcile, it’s Waverly who saves his sister and defeats the witch and her curse, burning the haunted dress and locating a new, curse-free one to advance down the hall.
Waverly and Nicole’s wedding continues, with the magical antics largely discarded, as the happy couple officially reaffirm their love for each other and are married. Jeremy had spent most of the season mourning his ex-boyfriend Robin’s memory loss to the cursed mist emanating from the Ghost River Triangle. With Jeremy now taking command of the Black Badge Division after recent unscrupulous changes to his new leadership, he seems focused on his career, but manages to land a first date with a handsome wedding caterer, implying that he is willing. to try to love again.
And then there are Wynonna and Doc. The hapless couple have certainly seen their fair share of ups and downs over the course of the entire series, seemingly breaking up for good in the midseason finale. As Doc seems ready to run off alone into the sunset, Waverly persuades Wynonna to go after the cunning gunman and confess his true feelings for him and remind him that he deserves love and happiness. Wynonna complies, with the couple rekindling their romance and deciding to leave Purgatory to reunite with their daughter Alice, who had been smuggled out of town to Montana to keep her safe from the evil that lurks in the Ghost River Triangle.
Series creator and showrunner Emily Andras has expressed her hopes of continuing Wynonna Earp for a fifth season but, should the series end with its fourth season, the show ends on a hopeful note for its main characters. Purgatory seems to finally be free of the monsters and magical malevolence that had plagued it for generations. No longer burdened by the constant need to hunt down monsters and protect their hometown, all the main characters have a happy ending, with open roads and blue skies before them.
Produced by SEVEN24 Films and IDW Entertainment, Wynonna Earp stars Melanie Scrofano as the title character, Dominique Provost-Chalkley as Waverly, Katherine Barrell as Nicole Haught, and Tim Rozon as Doc Holliday.
