Crime of the Century Trailer: New HBO Documentary Focuses on the Opioid Crisis


A new two-part HBO documentary on the opioid crisis by Alex Gibney of Going Clear has released a trailer ahead of its HBO Max release on May 10.

HBO has released the trailer for Crime of the century, a new documentary on the opioid crisis. The opioid crisis, also called the opioid epidemic, began in the late 1990s due in part to increased numbers of prescription pain relievers. From 1999 to 2017, nearly 400,000 Americans died from illicit or prescription opioid overdoses. The crisis has already spawned many interpretations of fiction and nonfiction, including the PBS documentary series. Do no harm, brother Russo Cherry based on the novel by Nico Walker, and even a Sesame Street resident whose mother struggles with opioid addiction.

Now, HBO has released the trailer for his own addition to the speech, The crime of the century. The two-part documentary tracks with prescription opioids like OxyContin and Vicodin go from drastic treatments to All-American pills. The movie trailer argues that the rise in prescription opioid use was far from organic growth, but rather a motivated business choice defined by corporate greed and reckless disregard for the long-term health of patients. Crime of the century comes from director and producer Alex Gibney, the Academy Award-winning documentary maker behind the Scientology exhibit Going clear. Gibney and HBO’s original documentary should be another excellent addition to the growing catalog of recent streaming documentaries tackling the opioid crisis. From Netflix The pharmacist, about a man’s search for the pill mill that led to his son’s death, was released in February 2020 to modest critical success. That more intimate presentation of the crisis was followed last summer by the streaming giant The drug business, a multi-part series on the war on drugs whose ending is about opioids. All those interested in seeing what aspects of the crisis Crime of the century Exposes you can tune in to watch the documentary on May 10 when it hits HBO Max.
