Natalie Portman to star in HBO movie ‘the Days of Abandonment’

‘Noviciado’ filmmaker Maggie Betts will write and direct the adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s best-selling novel.


Oscar winner Natalie Portman will be executive producer and protagonist The days of abandonment for HBO Films, which is currently in pre-production on the project.

The days of abandonment It follows Tess (Portman), a woman who gave up her own dreams for a stable home life, only to find her world spinning off its axis when she is in turn abandoned by her husband. According to HBO, the film will be “a boundless and visceral journey into the mind of a woman in crisis as she faces the norms of motherhood and female identity as Tess traverses the darkest confines of her own psyche.”

Portman will executive produce alongside Sophie Mas via their MountainA banner, and will be joined as EP by Celine rattray Y Trudie styler from Maven Screen Media, Len Amato from Crash & Salvage, Domenico Procacci for Fandango, and Maria zuckerman. HBO Films is producing the film in association with Medusa and the project is already in pre-production.

The days of abandonment will serve as a meeting between Betts and Maven Screen Media, which produced Novitiate. That movie (pictured above) starred Margaret qualley as a young woman who begins to question her faith while training to become a nun, and it earned Betts the award for best director at Sundance. Maven is dedicated to addressing gender imbalance in film by focusing on narratives told through the female lens.
