Gaten Matarazzo, star of Stranger Things, comments on the idea of a spin-off series for his character Dustin Henderson and Joe Keery’s Steve Harrington.
Strange thingsGaten Matarazzo, who plays the beloved nerd, Dustin Henderson, reveals that he fully supports a spinoff series for his character and Joe Keery’s former popular stud Steve Harrington. The show is entering its fourth season after its mind-blowing premiere in 2016, and it appears the Duffer brothers (creators of Stranger Things) have no plans to slow down anytime soon.
The story so far has focused on a group of children who are trying to uncover the sinister secrets their little suburban town of Hawkins hides. THATin the style of Stephen King. Matarazzo’s gang of friends is rounded out by co-stars Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp, Caleb McLaughlin, Sadie Sink, and of course the show’s shining star, Millie Bobby Brown. Each subsequent season has featured the ongoing metamorphosis of the monster we first met in season one as it continues to evolve and become a threat that even Brown’s Eleven cannot suppress. The rest of the cast is made up of the iconic Winona Ryder and David Harbor, teenage journalists played by Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton, and a slew of new faces joining the Hawkins craze.

And online spoke with Matarazzo about the upcoming season along with the widely rumored spin-off concept of Dustin and his new best friend, Steve. Dustin and Steve began to build their unlikely friendship in season two, which was reportedly accidental, as the writers saw two characters facing the same dilemmas and grouped them together simply by plot direction. This iconic duo has since become a fan favorite relationship. While Matarazzo did not confirm any spin-off plans already in the works, he expressed support for the idea. Matarazzo stated:
I think a Dustin-Steve spinoff would be nice if it was in a weird niche format. Like, they didn’t do a full show … kind of like a WandaVision type or like a web series where on YouTube, there are weekly episodes of little shenanigans that they get into, like from time to time, like a parody. Show. That would be great. Somehow you break that format.
Matarazzo is certainly no stranger to breaking out of the regular episode-by-episode television format, such as his hidden camera series. Prank Encounters enters its second season. He indicates his concern with developing an entire show based purely on Steve and Dustin’s antics, or rather, the difficulty that he considers they will encounter while trying to develop the story. Matarazzo explained:
I don’t know if a spinoff of the full Dustin and Steve series is sustainable. What are they going to do for a whole season, just them?
So while Matarazzo is a fan of the spin-off concept, it seems that the production, if any, will be on a smaller scale than fans might expect. Although the Dustin-Steve spin-off wouldn’t be a total risk, as there have been several successful character spin-off shows in the past. The most popular include Mork and Mindy, starring Robin Williams and Pam Dawber, Frasier which focused on the main character, Frasier Crane from Cheers, The Simpsons whose characters first appeared in The Tracy Ullman Show, And the list goes on! Only time will tell to see if the Duffer brothers, in fact, take a leap of faith with Strange things‘Dustin and Steve and their iconic bromance; Whatever they do, it’s sure to be a hoot.
