After separating Bucky’s arm in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Ayo curses him on behalf of the panther goddess of Wakanda, Bast.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Episode 4 features a tense moment between Bucky and Ayo, when warrior Dora Milaje uses a safety to deactivate and separate Bucky’s arm in the middle of a fight. It’s a move that stops the Winter Soldier in his tracks, but there’s some confusion as to what exactly Ayo says to Bucky afterward.

“The Whole World is Watching” reunites Bucky and Ayo several years after the Winter Soldier left Wakanda with a new arm and a mind free from the influence of HYDRA. Needless to say, Ayo isn’t happy about Bucky helping Baron Helmut Zemo, the man who murdered King T’Chaka of Wakanda, escape from prison. In their initial confrontation, it is revealed that Bucky speaks at least a little of Wakandan (although since Wakanda is a fictional nation, the Marvel Cinematic Universe actually uses Xhosa for Wakandan dialogue).

After disabling her arm, Ayo talks to Bucky followed by his first name, James. Disney + subtitles give this line as “(SPEAKING WAKANDAN), James. “However, the subtitles are not foolproof and since Wakandan’s dialogue is translated elsewhere in the episode, it seems unlikely that the show will not offer a translation at such a crucial time. What Ayo is actually saying is Bast, damn you, James, “ in English. According to the origin story of Wakanda, Bast is the panther goddess who led the first Black Panther to the Heart Shaped Grass which granted her superhuman powers. It is from Bast that the Black Panther gets its name, and the large statue of the panther seen in Wakanda is a tribute to Bast.

Considering both Bast’s importance in Wakandana culture and Bucky’s reaction to the words “Bast, damn“It seems to be one of the harshest curses Ayo could have cast. Although she is no longer happy with him at the beginning of the episode, it is not until Bucky uses her arm, made of vibranium and given as a gift by the people of Wakanda – in In the battle against Dora Milaje, Ayo takes the action to activate the lock. Between collaborating with the assassin of King T’Chaka and using vibranium against the people of Wakanda, Bucky has committed a grave betrayal.

In the midst of this conflict, Zemo took the opportunity to make a quick getaway. Interestingly, Zemo’s name is included in Bucky’s list of people to whom he must amend his actions as the Winter Soldier. It is unclear if this means that Bucky wants to amend Zemo for some reason, or if he wants to amend it by holding Zemo accountable for his actions during Captain America: Civil War. Either way, Bucky should probably add Ayo to his list of names too and start working to earn her forgiveness.
