Superpowers were a major focal point of Mortal Kombat (2021), but not all of the character’s arcana are the same.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Mortal Kombat., now in theaters and airing on HBO Max.

Following the lead of the superhero movies that dominate the film market today, Mortal Kombat (2021) featured the superpowers of the fighters as a central part of the plot. Known as the “arcane” of a fighter, each character has a unique ability that allows them to integrate super powerful moves into their martial arts fighting style. However, not all special abilities are equally useful. Let’s highlight some of the coolest and most powerful featured in Mortal Kombat (2021).

5. Kano

Probably the character most concerned about the coldness of his arcana is Kano, the Black Dragon terrorist who provided much of the film’s bombastic humor. As the prisoner of Sonya Blade and the group’s foul-mouthed ruffian, Kano reluctantly allied himself with the heroes in their fight to protect Earthrealm. But when his arcana didn’t wake up to give him super abilities like the others, he found that rage was his trigger.

Kano fired a precise beam of heat energy out of his left eye, blasting a path through wherever his gaze passed. This made Kano a particularly deadly threat from a distance, as his laser pierced a solid stone like a hot knife through butter. However, his weakness was hand-to-hand combat, which places his arcana, albeit one of the best, not in the first place.

4. Kung Lao

Kano mocked the power of Kung Lao during Mortal Kombat (2021), considering the Earthrealm champion’s ability to control his razor-sharp hat. In fact, based on that description alone, it certainly seems unconvincing, but with clever use and the added teleportation ability, Kung Lao was one of the best parts of the movie overall.

The arcana of Kung Lao are integrated into his fighting style in a visually stunning way, while Kano’s inexperience with his powers in combination with his fighting style proved his downfall. Kung Lao’s hat is deadly, it cuts through stone or twists like a circular saw to cut Nitara in half. Despite his captivating appearance, Kung Lao made lemonade out of lemons by mastering one of the most intimidating and innovative powers in the film.

3. Raiden

TADANOBU ASANO as Lord Raiden in Mortal Kombat (2021)

Not all characters in Mortal Kombat (2021) He fought like a deadly Earthrealm champion, but just because his abilities weren’t fully on display in a fight scene doesn’t mean they didn’t get a chance to show off. The perfect example of this is Raiden, the protector who gathered the defenders of humanity and coordinated them throughout the ending. It makes sense that Raiden is one of the most powerful characters, considering he is a literal god.

Raiden’s command of the lightning allowed for massive teleportation that was particularly useful in planning and executing Earthrealm’s strategy. He even fired lightning bolts as a devastating offense and erected a massive shield to defend himself from the forces of Shang Tsung. Raiden may deserve first place, but fans will have to wait until a sequel for the god of thunder to show what he can actually do.

2. Liu Kang

Kano may have ridiculed Kung Lao’s ability to control his hat, but even he admitted that Liu Kang’s fireball throwing ability was great. Liu Kang wielded his arcana as skillfully as his cousin Kung Lao. However, the heights to which he soared with them proved to be even greater, as the pyrotechnic display of martial arts provided him with the same effectiveness in range or melee.

Perhaps most impressive was Liu Kang’s ability to shape and control flames, manifesting a huge fire dragon that consumed his opponent. And yet, even in the midst of his pyrokinetic abilities, Liu Kang still had room for his signature move – the bicycle kick. Seemingly unrelated to his fire-based arcana, Liu hovered in midair and launched a quick series of kicks that demolished his opponent.

1. Sub-Zero

JOE TASLIM as Sub-Zero / Bi-Han in Mortal Kombat (2021)

The other fighters scored high on different skills based on their power, creativity, utility, and the degree to which they displayed them in Mortal Kombat (2021). But the gold in every possible metric was the movie villain Bi-Han, aka Sub-Zero. The cryokinetic ninja froze the surroundings around him, his presence often preceded by icy windowpanes and snowflakes falling through the air.

Sub-Zero was without a doubt the deadliest fighter in Mortal Kombat (2021), defeating virtually anyone he faced in a one-on-one with superior skill and raw power. He froze the body parts of his victims or quickly froze their entire bodies, often integrating ice projectiles with weapons he made at any time for a melee attack. This power is precisely the reason why it took multiple fighters to overpower Sub-Zero. No matter who won in the end, the action sequences make it pretty clear, there’s no one cooler than Sub-Zero.

Directed by Simon McQuoid and produced by James Wan, Mortal Kombat stars Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson “Jax” Bridges, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang. , Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han and Sub-Zero, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion, Max Huang as Kung Lao, Sisi Stringer as Mileena, Matilda Kimber as Emily Young, and Laura Brent as Allison Young. The film is already in theaters and airs on HBO Max.
