Netflix has released a new feature film in which the creators of Yasuke talk about putting together a historical fantasy about the famous black samurai.
Netflix has released a new feature film in which the creators of Yasuke breaks down what was used to make a series about the black samurai.
Subtitled “East Meets West”, the video features clips and interviews with the people behind the scenes of Yasuke, discuss how such a unique project came to be. “Nationalities and languages are irrelevant. You can work with any creator,” said Manabu Otsuka, CEO of MAPPA, the animation studio behind Yasuke. “I thought I could see what kind of animation an international audience could enjoy. I saw it as a fascinating opportunity and took this assignment.”
Series creator and director LeSean Thomas said: “It wasn’t until we started working with MAPPA that the concept of East and West really came into play.”
“We first recorded the voices in English,” Otsuka continued. “Then we created a video to match the lip movements.” CGI director Fuminori Nomoto explained that the process was “quite challenging. I noticed that the director saw the details that the Japanese generally don’t see. Several different races appear in this anime.”
The main of the English dubbing actors is LaKeith Stanfield as the samurai of the same name. Stanfield spoke about his role in the feature film, saying, “Yasuke is an old warrior, a samurai, who has seen many battles. [He] He decided ‘Now I want to sit down’, but has to wake up again when called to action again. But now it’s not so much about fighting and bravery, it’s more about exceeding your own expectations internally. “
Getting involved in the project, Stanfield said, “I want to dedicate myself more to voice acting, and once I saw the talented people involved, it was easy for me.” He concluded: “It was such a different beast to act on screen.”
Thomas closes by saying, “I feel like the things I do are essentially gateway anime. Projects like this allow audiences who are unfamiliar with it, but curious about it, to lean on and [say] ‘What’s this about? I don’t really like anime, but LaKeith plays a black samurai. I want to check that. ‘”
Created by LeSean Thomas, Yasuke stars LaKeith Stanfield as Yasuke, Takehiro Hira as Nobunaga, Maya Tanida as Saki, Ming-Na Wen as Natsumaru, Paul Nakauchi as Morisuke, Darren Criss as Haruto, Julie Marcus as Nikita, and William Christopher Stephens as Achoja. The series is now available on Netflix.
