Jerome Young, the former professional wrestler known to wrestling fans around the world as the hardcore wrestler New Jack, has passed away. According to PWInsider, Young’s wife Jennifer revealed that the former ECW star died Friday after a heart attack at her home in North Carolina. He was 58 years old at the time of his death.
“With his fierce and competitive style, New Jack was known for pushing the limits of wrestling to its extremes,” a WWE statement read. “Young broke onto the sports entertainment circuit with the Memphis-based American Wrestling Association in 1992. As one half of The Gangstas, New Jack made his EC debut in 1995, and due to the company’s extreme style, this was where the hardcore fighter flourished the most. With a penchant for using weapons against his opponents, New Jack became known for always carrying a trash can into the ring full of makeshift weapons. He remained one of ECW’s best-known stars until the company retired in 2001.
Perhaps due to his violent nature, New Jack was never hired to fight on WWE television. He would fight in various other promotions throughout the rest of his career, including CZW, Extreme Rising, XPW, and TNA. He last fought in 2017 against fellow ECW alumni CW Anderson and Shane Douglas. In another of his last matches, he teamed up with The Sandman and Justin Credible on an ECW reunion show.
New Jack’s reputation has earned him recognition outside of the wrestling business. He is referenced in Weezer’s 1996 single “El Scorcho”. He also played a motorcyclist on the television series.
