Christopher Miller shares a look at the brainstorming process behind the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse bagel gag and views it on screen.

With Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse two More than a year away, producer Christopher Miller shared a behind-the-scenes look at how the original film came up with one of its memorable comic moments: the animation of a bagel hitting someone.

“Sep 28, 2018 10:33 AM: A Piece of History Was Born”, Miller wrote on Twitter, along with part of a group email headed by co-director and co-writer Rodney Rothman about possible burst cards they could include in Spider-verse. The email reveals that it was Rothman who suggested, “Maybe the little BONK bagel says” BAGEL! “O” BAGEL BONK! “, A reference to a joke about Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson) grabbing a bagel after stealing Wilson Fisk’s Super. – Collider data. The final product eventually used ‘BAGEL !!!’ after Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) threw Peter B.’s bagel in the face of a scientist during his escape.

Loosely adapted from 2014 Spider-verse comic, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse follows Miles’s origins as a new Spider-Man where, after receiving powers, he teams up with several Spider-Men from parallel universes to prevent Fisk’s Super-Collider device from destroying reality.

Among the cast of the film is Peter B., an older, vulgar, and more cynical Spider-Man divorced from Mary-Jane Watson, who reluctantly becomes Miles’s mentor in order to return home. The film was released in 2018 and was acclaimed by critics and audiences alike, and won countless awards, including the Golden Globe and the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Work on the sequel to the animated film will feature three new directors, although Miller will write the script alongside David Callahan and collaborator Phil Lord. It was recently announced that Shameless star Issa Rae had joined the cast of the sequel as Jessica Drew / Spider-Woman, though the extent of her role has yet to be revealed.

Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 hits theaters on October 7, 2022.
