Loki director Kate Herron confirms that Loki is gender fluid and discusses how important it was for the show to make that canon.
When asked about Loki’s recent promo that apparently revealed that the Marvel Cinematic Universe God of Mischief is gender fluid, series director Kate Herron confirmed that aspect of Loki and explained how important it was to him. the program do that “canon”. “in the MCU.
Loki’s gender fluidity seemed to leak for the first time in a promo for the new series. The promo features a clip from the show, where a time-shifted Loki is forced to work for the Time Variation Authority (TVA) to correct other time anomalies. The clip is shown as part of Loki’s archive by the seemingly omniscient TVA and under “sex” it lists “fluent”.
Loki’s gender fluidity has long been established in Norse myths and in the Marvel Comics Universe, too, as in Original Without # 5.5 (by Jason Aaron, Al Ewing, Simone Bianchi, Lee Garbett, Szymon Kudranski, Marco Checchetto, Riccardo Pieruccini, Adriano Dall’Alpi, Nolan Woodard and Paul Mounts) when Odin referred to his three sons Thor, Angela and Loki, like “My son, and my daughter, and my son who is both.”
Herron explained: “I would say the details are marked, but it is a recognized thing. He has a fluid genre in Norse mythology and comics and it felt like something important, as you say, to make sure it is canon.”
The star of LokiTom Hiddleston also spoke about this part of the character, explaining, “It’s always been around in the comics for some time and in the character’s history for hundreds, if not thousands of years.”
Similarly, the show’s lead writer Michael Waldron added, “I know how many people identify with Loki in particular and are eager for that portrayal, especially with this character. We work really hard.”
However, it is unclear if Loki’s gender fluidity will be expressly depicted in the series or perhaps just another character will be referenced. Still, it’s a step up for the character in the MCU.
Loki stars Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Owen Wilson as Mobius M. Mobius, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Ravonna Lexus Renslayer, Wunmi Mosaku as Hunter B-15, Tara Strong as Miss Minutes and Eugene Cordero as Casey, with Sophia Di Martino, Richard E. Grant and Sasha Lane in undisclosed roles. New episodes premiere Wednesdays on Disney +.
