F9 director Justin Lin says the new movie will justify why Dom has never mentioned John Cena’s Jakob before.
With F9, John Cena joins the Fast and Furious franchise as Jakob Toretto, brother of series leader Dominic. But an additional brother to the stern and noble outlaw, his sister Mia being the only one previously mentioned in the series, it is confusing for fans wondering where Jakob has been and why they have never seen him.
F9 director Justin Lin, who also directed the franchise entries Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift, Fast and Furious, Fast five Y Fast and Furious 6, acknowledged the enigma in an interview with Weekly entertainment. Especially since Dom, as the crew leader, often speaks of family as the most important thing. But according to Lin, “everything is going to be taken into account.”
Fast and Furious, the fourth film in the series, makes a passing reference to Torretto’s family tree when Mia and Dom have a conversation before Dom leaves for revenge. Mia says to Dom, “How do you say goodbye to your only brother?”
“We will win that line, I promise you,” Lin said.
Vin Diesel, who plays Dom, was impressed with Lin’s idea of how to integrate Jakob into the mix. “It was a very interesting concept. Even the person who is the spokesperson for the sorority could have a broken sorority in the past,” Diesel said.
Directed by Justin Lin, F9 stars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, John Cena, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang, Helen Mirren, Kurt Russell, and Charlize Theron. The film hits theaters on June 25.
