WWARNING: The following contains spoilers for Fruit basket: the final season Episodeof 11, “Goodbye, “now streaming on Crunchyroll and Funimation.
Episode 11 of Fruit basket: the final season, picks up where the previous episode left off, with Tohru running away from Kyo in sight as he leaves the hospital. This time, however, the scene is shown from his perspective. As she runs, she thinks that still wants being with Kyo but his body instinctively avoids him. It’s understandable that she’s confused, but as the episode progresses, the confusion gives way to clarity.
“Goodbye” finally reveals the origin of the zodiac’s curse and how the curse is broken once and for all.
When Kyo gets a chance to talk to Tohru, he apologizes for rejecting her earlier and finally confesses that he loves her. Tohru accepts both the apology and the confession, and not only are the two of them kissing, but Kyo is even willing to hug her in public, even if it means that she will turn into a cat. In this moment of love overcoming fear and self-hatred, Kyo hugs Tohru … and he doesn’t transform. His curse is finally broken.
In this point, Fruit basquet reveals the full story of how the curse came about. Instead of being tricked by the Rat into leaving a feast with God, as legend has traditionally said, it turns out that the Cat was God’s first friend and the inspiration for animal feasts. When the cat died, God decided to resurrect the cat and form bonds with all the animals of the zodiac so that their souls would always meet even after their death. However, this supposed act of kindness was done without the consent of the Cat, and when he came back to life, the Cat rejected immortality in favor of letting him go. It was this that caused the Cat to be rejected from the zodiac and given its additional curse.
Akito, the current and now final incarnation of this “God”, is finally learning what the Cat tried to teach his original incarnation. Tohru has given her permission to stop judging herself as “unclean”. Now Akito cries out to God for permission to be herself, in all her weakness and uncertainty, and offers an intense plea that her family mourns for her.
Not only is Kyo’s curse broken, but all cursed Sohmas are released from the curse. Ayame finally hugs his girlfriend, Rin, Kisa and Hattori burst into tears, Ritsu and Kagura are in shock and Shigure … basically just shrugs. Yuki’s response to the breaking of the curse is the only one not shown, which will justify its own scene next week. The Sohmas can finally learn to be human.
New episodes of Fruit basket: the final season Premiere on Mondays, subtitled on Crunchyroll and dubbed on Funimation.
