Q is officially back in Star Trek: Picard season 2, but is now older despite being immortal. We explain the reasons why Q changed his appearance.

Star Trek: Picard The season 2 trailer revealed the first look at Q (John de Lancie), who seems curiously older than in his appearances in Star Trek: The Next Generation. The return of Q is one of the most anticipated aspects of Star Trek: PicardEspecially now that Jean-Luc (Patrick Stewart) is back in action, saved the galaxy, said goodbye to the late Commander Data (Brent Spiner), and received a new android body.

Much to Picard’s chagrin, he and Q have been inexorably close since the beginning of Star Trek: The Next Generation. They both debuted in TNGThe pilot, “Encounter at Farpoint”, where the omnipotent being tried Picard and the crew of the USS Enterprise-D for humanity to dare to explore the last frontier. Q was also present during TNGThe ending, “All Good Things,” which saw Picard face three alternate timelines that were destroying reality. Of course, in between, the all-powerful trickster repeatedly appeared on Picard’s starship and annoyed him. Not to mention that Q is responsible for presenting the Business to the threat of the Borg. Q has also appeared in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, where he transferred his fixation to Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), and even Star Trek: Lower Decks. But still, Picard and Q are united forever, and no one captured the immortal space god fantasy like “My captain”.

On Star Trek: Picard Season 2, Q’s comeback is highly significant as he looks considerably older, which is strange for an immortal who never gets old. But the reason why Q grew old is reflected in his words to Jean-Luc: “Oh dear. You are a little older than I imagined.”. Evidently, Q decided to age appropriately to match Picard, who is now about 95 years old in Star Trek: Picard season 2, which is set to the year 2399 or 2400 and the timeline has already crossed to the 25th century. Actually, this is not unusual for Q: the omnipotent being has always chosen to don a Starfleet uniform when boarded the Businessand always enraged Captain Picard. In addition, Q has always considered Jean-Luc a pet, so he alters his appearance to reflect his favorite lesser self, contrary to what is often said that a pet can begin to resemble its owner.

Picard Season 2 Old Q

Of course, the real-world reason why Q seems older is that it’s been over 25 years since he’s seen Picard and John de Lancie grow old, just like Patrick Stewart and everyone else. TNG cast has. But Star Trek: PicardThe solution to explain that Q looks older is simple, ingenious, and fully suited to the irrepressible prankster. In a way, it’s a sign of respect and an endearing move that Q aged to make Picard more comfortable with his own mortality. Perhaps Q has matured in his spare time. It’s also interesting that Q’s surprise at Picard getting older indicates that he has left Jean-Luc alone and hasn’t bothered him since the days when Picard commanded the Enterprise-D on TNG.

None of this to say that Q will maintain its older look. Star Trek: Picard Season 2 is a time travel story where the Star trek the timeline is “broken” and Q causes exploration of the “roads not taken” by Picard and his new crew. There is certainly a possibility that the show will employ digital aging technology to make Q (and possibly Jean-Luc) appear 25 years younger to resemble how they appeared on TNG. There may also be an additional twist involved that could explain that Q has really aged against his will. But young or old, it’s exciting to see Q again, and Star Trek: Picard Season 2 should bring back many fond memories as Q taunts Jean-Luc through this new time travel adventure to save the future.
