Director M. Night Shyamalan says he’s still trying to decide how to finish his new film, Old, before the film opens in theaters in July.

Director M. Night Shyamalan has yet to decide how his new film, Old, will finish. Scheduled for release in July, Old follows a family on vacation who discovers that the beach they visit mysteriously causes them to age quickly. Based on marketing materials, such as Old trailer, the film appears to be one of Shyamalan’s signature genre thrillers, offering plenty of scares and intrigue as the characters try to figure out what’s happening to them.

Back to dating The sixth SenseOne of Shyamalan’s staples as a filmmaker (for better or for worse) is the twisted ending. His films usually have some kind of revelation that recontextualizes what came before, like Bruce Willis’s Malcolm Crowe is a ghost or Pull apart taking place in the same universe as Unbreakable. Due to Shyamalan’s history, there is great interest in seeing how Old The story unfolds, even if there will be a big twist. While audiences wait to see what the director has in store, Shyamalan continues to find out for himself.

Speaking at a Tribeca Film Festival panel to promote Old (via Central of terror), Shyamalan discusses his process. He noted that he is still not sure how the movie will end, recalling Unbreakable conclusion. See their comments in the space below:

“I am deciding on the minor note; how to end on a minor note. Unbreakable ends in a kind of dip, right? It goes to the dark note, that minor note at the end. The guy you thought was the best friend is the villain … the least note sticks to you forever. “

Old Movie Trailer

It is clear that Shyamalan is thinking a lot about Old end and want to create something that resonates with audiences. The best movies of Shyamalan’s career were arguably elevated by his late game reveals, and the director wants Old to evoke similar feelings. The interesting thing is Old is based on the graphic novel Sandcastle, which means that there is a pre-published story to follow as a model. If Shyamalan is still deciding the conclusion of his film, he may be deviating a bit from the original material. It will be fascinating to see how Old the story unfolds and where the film is located in Shyamalan’s filmography. It experienced a resurgence in recent years, but 2019 Glass turned out to be divisive.

Maybe when Old opens up and the public can experience it, Shyamalan will open up more about his process and other endings he considered. It appears that there could be a possibility of alternate endings being revealed as part of the household press release. Perhaps it triggered multiple conclusions during Old difficult main photography and you’re weighing the pros and cons of each before locking out the final image. No matter, Old is shaping up to be one of the most exclusive offers of the summer movie season. While Shyamalan hasn’t always been a critical favorite, his films are often fascinating watches, so hopefully Old It turns out to be one of his best efforts.
