Few actors are so iconic that they can be the voice of a character in an 80s children’s show and go on to play the same character almost forty years later in a big-budget movie version. That, however, is exactly what Peter Cullen has done and continues to do as he reprises his role as Optimus Prime in the next one. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts movie. If you are looking for a safe job in Hollywood, there is nothing more than this.
Cullen was the original voice of Optimus Prime in the Transformers first outing in the 1984 cartoon series. Since then, he has lent his voice to the character in animated series, movies, games, and of course recent big-budget live-action movies, continuing with the new sequel to this year. For nearly four decades, Cullen’s fatherly tone has dominated the Autobots and it looks like he’s not going to stop anytime soon.
Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura told a press conference the launch of the new film, “Peter cullen brought this character to life with his incredible voice in 1984. Will he return? Absolutely. There’s really no discussion without him, you know, unless he didn’t want it. That would be the only way he wouldn’t be here. I know Optimus is close and loved by him. Steven and I are going to talk soon about some of the things you want to bring to the table and vice versa. And so, yes, it is on board. “
It is almost unthinkable to imagine a Transformers movie that features Prime to not have Cullen’s voice behind the machine, so we’re grateful that he’s happy to continue to voice the leader of the Autobots and that the producers are more than willing to let him continue. As there seems to be a new wave of Transformers Movies and potentially series to come, we can expect to hear a lot more from Cullen in the near future.
When the new movie was officially revealed today, one of the first things shared was Optimus Prime’s return as the main focus of the movie, after Bumblebee became the star of the previous installment. However, as the Decepticons seem to be taking a minor role this time, it was Steven Caple Jr who had to explain more about what to expect from the latest entry to the franchise.
“We wanted to expand the universe, you have the Autobots and the Decepticons, and I would say my new style is the Terracons,” said Steven Caple Jr. “The Terracons are a new threat to Optimus Prime, and it’s something I’m proud of as get into the franchise. I’ve done Rocky with Creed, and you bring the nostalgia that fans want, but you also bring something they don’t expect, and the Terracons are that. “
“The Predacons in our movie are more reptilian in nature. We’ve seen some in the other Transformers movies, but we’ve never had a chance to focus on their logo, their tribe if you will, and we can see another side of them,” he continued. Caple Jr. “It’s about building a backstory for these characters that is more than just ‘let’s take over the world.’ Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is filming now and its premiere is scheduled for June 24, 2022.
