The Baroness’s role in the new GI Joe Origins trailer reveals why the titular ninja is named Snake Eyes.

Joe swordsman, which includes showing off his classic outfit and how the Cobra organization will be established in this rebooted universe. More important than that, however, are the glimpses he provides to Snake Eyes’ life before he became a member of the Arashikage clan.
G.I. Joe Heroes and villains Scarlett and Baroness appear in the trailer, and it’s when the latter is seen that fans can see why the titular ninja is named Snake Eyes. This is how the origin of GI Joe’s greatest character is different than usual and why it is now a great roll of the dice.
The origin of the snake eyes in the trailer
The trailer shows the first images of Snake Eyes’ life before joining the Arashikage clan, with him making his bones as an underground fighter. Eventually he and his friend join the ninja clan, which is tasked with secretly keeping peace across the world. Unfortunately, one of his main enemies is the growing threat of Cobra, a ruthless terrorist organization determined to rule the world.
One of Cobra’s emissaries is the franchise’s iconic Fatal Woman, the Baroness. She already knows quite a bit about Snake Eyes even before meeting him, including his nickname. Right after she playfully says the name in the trailer, a two-point die is shown in someone’s hands. This moment suggests that Snake Eyes derives his nickname from dice, which could be related to his past as a fighter. And while this rather mundane explanation makes sense, it differs from the classical origin of the codename.
The origin of snake eyes in other continuities
In most continuities, Snake Eyes’ codename has no origin, which is confusing because it makes him look like a villain due to GI Joe’s main antagonist being Cobra. In Larry Hama’s original Marvel Comics, it was related to a roll of the dice and was derived from the last words his father said to him. The caricature GI Joe: Forsaken Once again he explained the somewhat puzzling title, and it had nothing to do with gambling. The master of the Arashikage clan, Hard Master, bequeathed the ninja the name “Hebi no me”, which in Japanese means Snake Eyes, because he has the “steely gaze of a snake”.
This is the closest explanation before the next movie for the name, which is still somewhat puzzling. After all, many GI Joe members have code names that reflect their rank or role on the team, such as Tunnel Rat or Firefighter Barbecue. There may still be more to the name in Snake Eyes Than a simple pair of dice, but fans will have to wait until the ninja makes his way into theaters to find out.
