Marvel Comics is killing off some of its biggest characters ahead of its upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, but why?

Warning! Spoilers for this week’s Marvel Comics releases below.

Marvel Comics can’t help but slaughter some of their greatest heroes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe in comics. After previously announcing a series of murders Strange doctor and one making fun of the death of Spiderman, two more heroes with upcoming MCU projects to come soon were killed. On X Factor # 10, Scarlet Witch Met Her End At The Hellfire Gala, While At Black Knight: Curse of the Ebon Blade, Dane Whitman could have done it too.

The next year is full of MCU projects, including heavy hitters like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Insanity, as well as Spider-Man: No Way Home. In an effort to further align the comic book side with the movies, characters like America Chavez, Ms. Marvel, and Kang on the Conqueror received new series, gently reintroducing their adventures for new audiences. While less familiar faces are getting new origins or stories, some of the greatest heroes in both the comics and the MCU are being mysteriously killed.

This week’s releases from Marvel Comics featured the deaths of two heroes who will play major roles in the future of the MCU. On X Factor # 10 by Leah Williams, David Baldeon, Lucas Werneck, David Messina, and Israel Silva, Scarlet Witch was found dead when the Hellfire Gala event came to a close. His death will lead to The Magneto test arc, where her father, one of the last people to see her alive, is apparently on trial for murdering his daughter. As for Scarlet Witch’s upcoming MCU co-star Doctor Strange? Marvel revealed plans to kill him also in The death of Doctor Strange.

Doctor Strange Death (2)

The deaths don’t end there. Marvel Comics heavily mocked Peter Parker’s death in the upcoming Spider-Man: beyond arch, with images showing Mary Jane Watson holding her lifeless body. Meanwhile in Black Knight: Curse of the Ebon Blade # 4 by Si Spurrier, Sergio Davila, Sean Parsons, Arif Prianto and Cory Petit of VC, the Black Knight, who will debut in the next Eternal movie seemingly comes to an end after being stabbed by his own sword, as a new hero is ready to wield the Ebony Blade.

Staying dead in the comics is practically impossible these days, as many of the slain heroes are already being teased for future projects. However, killing Strange doctor and Scarlet Witch, as well as the possible deaths of Black Knight and Spiderman, right before his next MCU projects, it seems like more than just a coincidence. Marvel Comics is likely taking a strange approach to injecting new life into the characters by killing them to relaunch them before their movies (hello Mutant Scarlet Witch?). But even so, seeing such popular heroes fall at the same time is certainly curious.
