In an interview with THR, Florence Pugh revealed the real-life origins behind Yelena’s kind teasing towards Natasha for her trademark pose during fights. Turns out this detail was a last minute addition to the script after Pugh taunted Scarlett on set for the “ridiculousPose. Pugh recounted the experience below:
I remember the stunt team telling me, “So Florence, what are we going to do with your pose?” And I was like, “Oh my, I have to think of a pose !?” And they said, “Yeah, because you know this is Scarlett.” And I was like, “I know! Who would land like this? That’s ridiculous! “And they said, ‘Well yeah. If he really landed like that, he would have broken his spine.” And I remember I was just kidding [Scarlett] for that, and Eric [Pearson], the writer, was on set and said, “Yeah, that goes in the script!”
TO Black widow clip that premiered during Pugh’s recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! showed Yelena teasing Natasha for her pose, which will apparently be a joke throughout the movie. While the two are known to be rivals in Marvel comics, Black widow seems to be representing more of a brotherly dynamic between Yelena and Natasha, of which friendly teasing is an important part.
This dynamic seems to extend to Pugh and Johansson’s relationship as well, considering that Pugh’s jokes on set were actually the inspiration for a running joke within the movie universe. Natasha and Yelena’s sister roots seem to go back to their time together as children at the Red Room Academy, when Nat often played the role of Yelena’s older sister and protected her from danger. This dynamic is set to unfold in Black widow.
