With F9 proving to be a hit, Fast & Furious spin-offs are in the works. But instead of giving one about Cipher, I should go to Helen Mirren’s Queenie.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for F9, now in theaters.
With F9 proving to be a great success, Fast and Furious derivative products are being prepared. Vin Diesel has expressed interest in a Dom Toretto prequel, while a spin-off is planned with Charlize Theron’s cyber terrorist Cipher. However, although it is good that the Fast and Furious The series is keen to focus on its female characters, that movie should go to Helen Mirren’s Magdalene Shaw AKA Queenie.
Queenie doesn’t appear for long periods in the franchise, but she has so much poise and power in her performances that it’s easy to want more from her. She debuted in The fate of the furious as the mother of Deckard (Jason Statham) and Owen Shaw (Luke Evans), convincing her children to turn away from an evil life and help Team Toretto. And while she is in and out of jail, considering the convenience of having a form of retirement, F9 reinforces why it would be more suitable for a spin-off than Cipher.
Queenie is found by Dom during a jewelry heist in Europe while searching for information on her brother, and after she ties him up as an unwitting partner, she steals a high-end car and shows off her grace and skill behind the wheel. Dom is clearly impressed, especially by his driving skills, the way he commands, and how he continues to evade authorities with ease. Like Hobbs said, she’s the toughest woman he knows, and Dom can say, other than Letty, that’s the truth.
A spin-off can focus on how Queenie became this criminal mastermind in her early days. She could have the vibe of a James Bond woman and reveal more details about her past, especially since fans still don’t know who fathered their children. That angle could allow a younger actress to play the character in flashbacks, with Queenie in the present working alongside her sons or daughter, Hattie (Vanessa Kirby). A mother-daughter theft movie could also work very well, paving the way for Queenie to lend her expertise, knowledge and leadership to an exclusively female film, which is said to be in the works.
In reality, Cipher is a one-dimensional character, and his type of anarchy has no mystery. Queenie, on the other hand, has intrigue for her, and as she runs her operation around the world with her children, she would be the perfect person to continue the series’ family theme. Seeing as she’s also a pseudo-mother to Dom, respected by her industry peers and a general hit with fans, a Queenie spinoff feels like the logical next step to propel the franchise into high gear.
Directed by Justin Lin, F9 stars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, John Cena, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang, Helen Mirren, Kurt Russell, and Charlize Theron. The movie is in theaters now.
