Green Lantern just brought about the return of the forgotten power of the post-crisis that briefly made John Stewart one of the most powerful beings in DC.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Green Lantern # 4 by Geoffrey Thorne, Tom Raney, Marco Santucci, Michael Atiyeh, and Rob Leigh, on sale now.
The Green Lantern Corps has been adapting to a radically different change in its status quo with the destruction of the Central Power Battery, the weakening of the Corps, and the possible demise of the Guardians pushing the heroic army to its absolute limit. However, one of the Powerless Lanterns might already be on his way to becoming one of DC’s Guardians of the Universe.
Green Lantern # 4 just hinted that John Stewart might still have a power boost he received from Guardian Ganthet in the post-crisis DC Universe.

John Stewart was one of the many Green Lanterns traveling the cosmos when the Central Power Battery was mysteriously destroyed. As a result, he was stripped and led astray in the savage galaxy. Fortunately for him, he was saved by the kind Saqari. Spending months with her and her son, John heals from his injuries and sets out to protect the couple from a pack of marauding pirates. While briefly unconscious, John witnesses what appears to be a hidden memory of the period when Hal Jordan took down the Green Lantern Corps. In it, John confronts Ganthet and asks that his “ascension” be removed. But Ganthet explains that this cannot be undone, only that his memory and what it means can be erased for a time. This seems to refer to an important period in John’s life.
In the post-crisis DC Universe, John Stewart ended up being the star of Green Lantern: Mosaic by Gerard Jones and Cully Hammer. When a disturbed Guardian of the Universe uproots cities across the galaxy, he creates a strange world of mosaics. John Stewart was chosen as the Green Lantern of this strange sector and he quickly adapted to the challenge. Creating a sense of unity in the world, Stewart was chosen for the post of Guardian, the first mortal to be given such responsibility. However, he eventually left this position and lost his Guardian powers when Hal Jordan, possessed by Parallax, destroyed the Central Power Battery and effectively destroyed most of the Green Lantern Corps. However, it seems that this element of Juan’s story might not have ended as he believed.
In fact, it looks like those powers could become John’s greatest asset. John’s connection to the Guardians was highlighted in Green Lantern # 1, with John even assuming a commanding position over the other Corps members at their request and speaking briefly to them as a partner. If John’s ascension is still a part of him, he might find a way to restore his own ring of power, if not others. It might even be the key to finding out what happened to the other Guardians when the Central Power Battery was destroyed. Now locked in a perpetual state of undeath, the other Guardians have more or less been wiped off the playing field and might even be on the brink of death. If they do, then this secret power surge for John could make him even more important in the grand scheme of things.
Indeed, John could potentially replace the Guardians at the head of any restored Green Lantern Corps, even giving them a reason to be off Earth, allowing someone like Jo Mullein to assume a more full-time position as protector. in the space sector of the Earth. It could also make future Guardians much better connected with the Green Lanterns fighting for them. While the death of the Guardians would shake the universe to the core, it could allow John to step forward in an exciting new way.
