The latest episode of Rick and Morty teased a never-before-seen superhero story that is a standard part of their reality, with four phases of them.

Warning: the following contains SPOILERS for Rick and morty Season 5, Episode 3, “A Rickconvenient Mort”.

Rick and morty The season 5 episode, “A Rickconvenient Mort”, showed a secret history of superheroes operating on their version of Earth. This is notable as most episodes have suggested that his world was largely like the real world, until whatever weirdness Rick was dealing with that week got out of hand. However, “A Rickconvenient Mort” suggested that superheroes have been a common thing since at least the 1990s and referenced that there are at least four phases of superheroes.

The main story of “A Rickconvenient Mort” centered on the development of a romantic relationship between Morty and Planetina; a gender-swapped parody of Captain Planet. An environmental protector when she wasn’t making personal appearances or autograph fairs, Planetina was featured as a typical superhero who battled supervillains like pollution-loving Diesel Weasel. Rick and Morty Rick with the Vindicators

Rick and morty he’s parodied superheroes before, most notably in the season 3 episode “Vindicators 3: The Return of Worldender,” which featured the Vindicators team getting their own spinoff series. However, the Vindicators were a team of interstellar superheroes, comparable to the Guardians of the Galaxy, which didn’t seem to have much to do with Earth despite having some seemingly human limbs. This makes it even more jarring that the media and civilians in “A Rickconvenient Mort” did not regard Planetina as unusual or that Summer referred to her. “a superhero from phase four. “

While this terminology was reminiscent of Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it was never explained exactly what it meant in the context of Rick and morty. However, the fact that such terminology exists to define superheroes, regardless of the phases to which it refers in this case, suggests that many of these superheroes and supervillains are running. Perhaps more characters like Mr. Nimbus and Planetina will continue to appear in Rick and morty season 5. At the very least, there will likely be some kind of tailgate pilot to set up the Vindicators cleave.
