In their encounter during the JLA / Avengers course, Scarlet Witch easily wiped the floor with one of the DCEU’s upcoming threats.
Starro is one of the biggest threats in the DC Universe, and is currently appearing in the DC Extended Universe as one of the villains of Suicide squad. But just because he was a huge threat to the heroes of the DC Universe, it doesn’t mean he can defend himself against the heroes of the Marvel Universe.
And when Starro once took on the Avengers during a Marvel and DC crossover, Starro ended up being relatively easy to defeat thanks to the Scarlet Witch.
2003 JLA / Avengers The Kurt Busiek and George Perez crossover was an opportunity for some of the most powerful and notable figures from Marvel and DC to cross paths and briefly clash due to the machinations of Krona and Grandmaster. This includes some of his more absurd foes, including DC’s Starro the Conqueror. The giant marauding alien starfish has been an enemy of the Justice League for a long time, and seeks to extend its dominance across Earth by connecting humanity with its hive mind through a horde of tiny starfish that unite with living beings. Starro was actually such a great threat that he forced the original Justice League to meet in The brave and the bold # 28 by Gardner Fox and Mike Sekowsky, with Flash, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter and Green Lantern teaming up against him for the first time.
While the Justice League took on Marvel’s Terminus in the opening pages of JLA / Avengerswhile the Avengers faced Starro. Unprepared for the threat he posed, many of the Avengers, including Yellowjacket, Quicksilver, She-Hulk, and Thor, were quickly caught by miniature Starros and controlled. After releasing Quicksilver from their control, the rest of the Avengers learn of the alien’s orderly hive mind and choose to have Scarlet Witch use her Chaos Magic to disrupt the creature’s control over her friends. By placing one of the Starros on Scarlet Witch and creating a connection between the two, Scarlet Witch was able to unleash her chaotic energy on him, forcing the alien to retreat into the cosmos to escape its power.
It’s a relatively straightforward Avengers plan and impressive. Starro has been able to take over entire planets in the DC Universe, spreading his control across entire species before any formal resistance could be put up against him. And yet Marvel’s most powerful heroes were able to deal with him in about twenty minutes in the universe, and one of its most powerful members only needed to show his true power to force him to retreat in horror. Like the Avengers, it’s usually about someone being able to interrupt his abilities to defeat him, as in that original appearance (with the use of quicklime).
Still, those DC adventures still saw the entire world threatened by Starro’s arrival, and the Justice League often viewed the alien conqueror as a global threat. While the Avengers were certainly taken by surprise by the creature and its capabilities, they quickly adjusted and kept the threat contained within New York City. Chaos is the secret weapon against Starro, which bodes well for the Suicide Squad antiheroes in the DCEU, who are already heralded as an anarchic incarnation of the criminal super team. Being unpredictable and chaotic, like Scarlet Witch and her powers, could give lesser villains a chance against the mighty alien conqueror when they inevitably face him.
