While the title characters and the Smith family soon developed cult fandoms after the first season of Rick and morty aired, the series also has a shame of riches when it comes to supporting characters. From Danny Trejo’s Jaguar to Mr. Meeseeks to whatever Squanchy is supposed to be, the show has a knack for memorable supporting players.

Arguably the most popular is Mr. Poopybutthole, who first appeared on Rick and morty season 2. The character is an energetic and cheerful creature in the shape of a yellow sausage with arms and legs. Mr. Poopybutthole’s first appearance came Rick and morty season 2 episode “Total Rekall”. This sees Rick shutting down his home and family to fight an alien parasite that implants false memories, causing many colorful characters to suddenly appear and the family having to find out who is real. Mr. Poopybutthole suddenly appears as an old friend of the family and seems an obvious candidate to be a parasite. That is until Beth shoots Mr. Poopybutthole at the end of the story, having suspected throughout that he was a parasite in disguise, only to find out that it was real. The episode ends with the character in the hospital relearning to walk and asking a nurse to tell the Smith family to leave.

Mr. Poopybutthole reappears in Rick and morty season 2 finale “The Wedding Squanchers” in a post-credits scene. He speaks directly to the audience about the events of the episode, wondering aloud how Rick will come out of being captured by the Galactic Federation and hinting that it could be close to two years before the show returns. He then made a small cameo in season 3, episode 8 of “Morty’s Mind Blowers”, where he is seen proposing to Morty during one of the latter’s flashbacks. He appears again in the season 3 finale “The Rickchurian Mortydate” where Mr. Poopybutthole’s family, consisting of his wife and son, is shown for the first time and the character again causes a long wait for season 4.

The last appearance of Mr. Poopybutthole was in Rick and morty Season 4, Episode 3 of “One Crew Over The Crewcoo’s Morty”, where he is shown as a college professor. Suddenly some of his students attack and he quickly knocks them down with his karate. It turns out this was all a ploy created by Rick to recruit him for his heist team, and Mr. Poopybutthole immediately agrees. However, he expresses regret in the post-credit scene that assaulting his students got him fired from the university. He and his family were also the subject of the cute little promotional short film “The Poop In My Pants.”
