Andrew McCarthy’s tweet last night will give you the laughs and the nostalgia. It’s helping the women of HBO’s revival of Sex and the city, photographing himself and Kim Cattrall in their classic ’80s mannequin form ManikinJoking, “I thought they would never call.”
The comments are hilarious. They show love for McCarthy, SATC, Kim Cattrall and the beloved Manikin. If you don’t understand the joke Manikinis a quintessential ’80s comedy that could only have been accepted by viewers of its time. The 80s recipe comes complete with malls, Andrew McCarthy, James Spader, Estelle Getty, Meshach Taylor, makeover montages, even a theme song, ‘Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now’ by Jefferson Starship.
The official MGM dinopsis puts it this way: artist Jonathan Switcher (out of luck) (Andrew McCarthy) bounces from one dead-end job to another, never holding onto any of them. But everything changes when he builds a mannequin, which he falls in love with. It’s the first thing he’s done that makes him feel like a true artist. To his surprise, Jonathan discovers the mannequin that is prominently displayed in the window of the Prince and Company department store. When he saves the life of an old woman who happens to be the owner of that store, he is rewarded by getting a job in the store as a delivery boy.
The mannequin later comes to life as Ema ‘Emmy’ Hesire, (Kim cattrall) who was an ancient Egyptian princess who lived in 2514 BC Beautiful and vivacious, this fatal woman helps Jonathan change his career, inspiring him to become the best window dresser in town. But Emmy soon discovers that the real world is not well liked, when they meet competitors who want to put them out of business for good.
And if you can’t get enough of crazy director Michael Gottlieb’s perfect ’80s creations, a treat awaits. Wrote and directed Mr. babysitter starring Hulk Hogan as a former professional wrestler who shows off his acting skills as a bodyguard / babysitter for a pair of spoiled kids whose inventor father is being bullied by a rival. Even David Johansen, famous for the New York Dolls, plays the villain. You know, aka Buster Poindexter who played the ghost of Christmas past in Scrooged. Go!
And if you STILL need more Manikin In his lifetime, one of the original ‘Emmy’ mannequins used in the filming of the film was restored by South Fellini and is currently on display in his store, which is located in the Fashion District in downtown Philadelphia (the head / torso are the original parts). Andrew McCarthy, you really brought it up with your Photoshop skills and a liner last night. You may have earned some well-deserved royalties from the (kissing my fingertips to the chef) silly, nostalgic romantic comedy that we captured on HBO a million times when we were kids. Now I have ‘Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now’ in my head. My favorite way to hear that melody is through the Skeletal twins Lip Sync. You can tape your camera so no one can see you go down.
Fans got their first look at And Just Like That … heading into the weekend, with three of the four main leads returning. The revival series will debut on HBO Max later this year.
