‘Black Widow’ writer Eric Pearson explains how the post-credits scene came together

Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for Black Widow.

Elaborating the Black widow The post-credits scene wasn’t an easy task. The movie is not just a prequel, it takes place before the events that changed the world of Avengers: infinity war Y Avengers Endgame, so whatever is triggered at the end of Black widow It has to be something that doesn’t feel out of place if it’s not addressed in the two biggest Avengers movies yet. On the other hand, not all credit scenes have to shape the future. iron Man 3The credits scene simply gave fans more of the “Science Bros” association between Robert Downey Jr. Y Mark Ruffalo, so sometimes it’s okay to have something that is emotionally fun.

But when it comes to Black widow credits scene, why not both? The label is quite a bit ahead of the future after the events of Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) alone for some time after his death, and meets his sister Yelena Bolova (Florence pugh) crying by his grave. It is an emotional and moving moment, as Natasha’s death remains in the background of all the proceedings of Black widow, but it is not made explicit until this precise moment. And then Julia Louis-Dreyfus shows up and literally blows snot all over Pugh’s quiet rhythm with his dead sister.

In fact, Louis-Dreyfus reprises her role as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine from The hawk in the winter soldier here to reveal that he has been working with Yelena and giving his assignments. She gives him a new assignment at this point: a target, one that was “responsible for your sister’s death,” she tells Yelena. And the camera reveals a photograph of Jeremy rennerit’s Hawkeye before he turns black.

In Marvel Comics, Valentina is deeply rooted in the spy world and has a personal history with Nick Fury, so clearly Marvel Studios is preparing some kind of story for her in the MCU. But since Black widow it was originally supposed to come out earlier The Falcon and the Winter SoldierWas this Valentina credits scene always planned this way, or was it added after Julia Louis-Dreyfus appeared on the Marvel Disney + show? Falcon and the Winter Soldier?

I asked Black widow Writer Eric Pearson when I spoke to him during a press day for the movie, and he revealed that this scene was written and filmed before Louis-Dreyfus filmed his role in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which paints it in a slightly different light.

But when talking about the Black widow In the credits scene, Pearson made it clear that Marvel has big plans for Valentina, and he had fun writing the character:

“I only know that they told me that we have plans to introduce this character, Valentina, and that she will be played by Julia Louis Dreyfus. And I couldn’t get to the computer fast enough. That scene on the label was probably about five pages long because I was so greedy. I was like, I want Yelena and Valentina to come and go, exchanging dialogues with each other. And ultimately that will never happen. You’re not going to have a whole scene like a stinger at the end. So we opted for the smaller version, but I was so excited to bring those two actors together, to put those two character dynamics together. And I also love to take an emotional moment, like Yelena in the grave, and then flush it down the toilet with Valentina blowing her nose. ”

Pugh had previously been announced as part of the cast of the upcoming Marvel Disney + series. Hawkeye, and we know that Valentina also recruited Wyatt Russell ‘s John Walker from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. It will be interesting to see who else you gather for your team and for what purpose. Do you have a great plan in mind? What does she have against Hawkeye? And where is Nick Fury in all of this? Like any good Marvel credits scene, this one leaves us with more questions than answers, and we’re all eager to see where it takes us.

But hearing it from the writer of Black widow himself, this was created internally at Marvel as a way to promote his big plans for Valentina and Yelena.
