Classic Loki’s last battle subtly connects with the Valkyries of Asgard

Using a Richard Wagner one-piece arrangement at a crucial moment in Episode 5 hints at where Loki and the MCU are headed.

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Loki episode 5.

Loki Episode 5, “Journey Into Mystery”, uses music to make a connection to the Valkyrie of Asgard during the final battle between Alioth and Richard E. Grant’s Classic Loki. The scene is one of the most dramatic visual climaxes of Loki thus far, rivaling Sylvie and Loki’s attempt to flee Lamentis-1 in episode 3. However, there is a musical secret for fans of classical music and opera that could give a clue as to where Marvel is headed. Cinematic Universe.

As Sylvie and Loki work together in an effort to enchant Alioth, “a living tempest that consumes matter and energy,” Classic Loki returns to help them at the last minute. Using his well-practiced magic, he distracts the monster by conjuring an illusion of the entire city of Asgard and buys the pair enough time to take control of Alioth before he is defeated. His heroic final position is backed by a full orchestra as he takes the words of Mobius (“Never too late to change”) Seriously and shows that Lokis can alter his destiny.

The piece of music that begins the moment Classic Loki is raising his illusion is an arrangement of Richard Wagner’s “The Ride Of The Valkyries” from the third act of his opera. The valkyrie (translates into The valkyrie). Natalie Holt, the songwriter of Loki, blatantly mocked the use of this song in an interview with Syfy Wire after episode 4 aired. Speaking of the music on the show, he said: “I would say that those flourishes on the subject of Loki are very Wagner. […] They are like ‘Ride of the Valkyries’.‘”The piece is a particularly appropriate choice for the final moments of Classic Loki as not only is it dramatic, but in the original opera, the piece covers Valkyrie’s preparation of her fallen comrades for their journey to Valhalla.

Loki Episode 5 Classic Loki Magic

While an Asgardian connection to the Valkyries is innate, another option in the series makes this choice of music feel particularly intentional. While Sylvie’s original nexus event has yet to be revealed, Loki has shown his catch on TVA. Right before being kidnapped by Ravonna, Sylvie is playing with a toy Valkyrie. The use of “Journey of the Valkyries” from an opera called “The Valkyrie” during a scene in which Sylvie is also demonstrating the strength of her power further supports the theory that Sylvie’s nexus event was turning into a Valkyrie.

The other possible story pointed out by the use of this piece could have less to do with the events of Lokiand instead create a story to Thor: love and thunder. Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie (aka Brunhilda) will play a major role when Thor bestowed the throne of Asgard on her at the end of Avengers Endgame. Thompson has teased that the movie will feature an LGBTQ + story as he searches for a queen, but could also include his work to rebuild the Valkyries to reestablish the legendary warrior force of Asgard.

Finally, and perhaps most controversially, while the relationship between Sylvie and Loki is controversial among the public, this could be a sign of how their relationship will end. Holt said in his interview that Wagner was a major influence on the show’s music, and if “The Ride Of The Valkyries” is Wagner’s most famous work, his closest second is “Bridal Chorus.” If Holt continues to follow this musical path, Loki Episode 6 could come to an end with the wedding bells.
