We have our first look at the return of Ghostface next year. Shout 5. that directors insist you just call He shouted, like 2018 Hallowe’en and its retroactive title. After wrapping up filming in North Carolina last year, the filmmakers recently completed post-production before the film’s release in early 2022. Co-director Matt Bettinelli-Olpin confirmed in a post on Twitter that the project was completed with a photo that revealed the He shouted title that appears in the opening of the film.
Now, Greg Russell, who worked as a mixer on the project, has revealed more photos from Scream’s final edit sessions on Instagram. Among them is our first look at Ghostface with the filmmakers posing in front of a screen wearing the iconic mask. Another image shows the mask on screen from further afield during the editing process, and horror fans have been sharing it en masse on social media.
“What a pleasure it was to spend this last month at Formosa Group with Karen Baker Landers and the entire Sound team from He shouted. Super fun filmmakers and a great Brian Tyler soundtrack. Sweet sound design by Karen, Peter Staubli, and Chris Smith. I had a great time and thanks again, “reads Russell’s original post.
Last week, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin also shared a picture revealing the team working on the movie’s opening logo. He also revealed that the project is officially in the can, adding the hashtag #ForWes as a tribute to Scream 1-4 director Wes Craven.
Bettinelli-Olpin directs He shouted with Tyler Gillett using a script by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. Part sequel and part reboot, the film brings back several fan favorites from the franchise as it relaunches the slasher movie franchise for a new generation. Among those returning is Roger L. Jackson as the voice of Ghostface, meaning that the same familiar voice will appear alongside the original mask.
Other returning characters include Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, David Arquette as Dewey Riley, Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers, and Marley Shelton as Judy Hicks. Meanwhile, the new He shouted It also stars Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Dylan Minnette, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sonia Ben Ammar, Mikey Madison, Mason Gooding, and Kyle Gallner.
Plot details are largely unknown at this point, but as with its predecessors, the film will introduce a new masked Ghostface assassin (or assassins) who embarks on a murder spree. Many longtime fans are wary that the franchise will continue without the involvement of series director Wes Craven after his death in 2015. It’s a good sign that Campbell and other members of the original cast are on board, as all of the involved want to honor Wes with the movie.
Fans will also appreciate that the original Ghostface mask is back for the new movie. In the adaptation of the television series developed by MTV, the mask received a redesign, although the basic plot remained the same. Some fans may have been concerned about the new movie changing the skin design as well, but it is now clear that this is not the case.
He shouted is scheduled to be released in theaters by Paramount Pictures on January 14, 2022. The first look at Ghostface’s return was revealed by Greg Russell on Instagram.
