Higurashi Sotsu: Rena, reaching the boiling point, makes a fatal decision

Now deep in L5, a series of unfortunate misunderstandings at Higurashi Sotsu finally push Rena to the extreme.

Rena’s descent to L5 continues to skew her perception in Higurashi Sotsu, with the intense paranoia brought on by the disease turning her against one of her closest friends in Episode 3. As things continue to unravel, Satoko watches over Rena by ensuring the failure of the fragment without Rika’s knowledge, and spurred on by suspicions and misconceptions. , Rena makes a fatal decision regarding Keiichi.

Paranoia devours her as she continues to dispose of Rina’s body in the episode, Rena digs a hole in the forest to hide the pieces, though she is still able to maintain her usual perky brow with the club members. In the days leading up to her attack on Keiichi, Rena becomes increasingly suspicious of him. Eventually, various misunderstandings along with the worsening effects of Hinamizawa syndrome convince Rena that Keiichi knows something about Rina’s murder.

Things only get worse when Ooishi asks to speak to Keiichi at school. Rena watches the two from a nearby window and knowing that Ooishi is a police officer, she suspects that Keiichi is working to get her arrested for the murder, which further agitates her. Satoko, who meets her, apparently takes pleasure in the current situation.

Rena’s feelings of insecurity come to a head when Keiichi then talks to Ooishi on the phone and the conversation unfolds through Rena’s perspective this time. Keiichi expresses his surprise at Rena’s past problems with the law, leading Rena to assume Keiichi makes reference to Rina’s murder and runs out of his house in a panic.

Now convinced that Keiichi knows about the murder, Rena decides to get rid of him. But on the night she leaves to do so, Rika watches her and Keiichi interact outside her home, optimistic that Keiichi will overcome her uncertainty and unaware of Rena’s intentions. In a dark twist, he encourages the two from outside, unaware of the violent fighting going on inside the Maebara house.

Satoko and Rika find out about the attack along with the rest of their classmates the next day, and when Chie tells everyone that Rena did not survive her injuries, Rika leaves with Satoko not far away. Having proclaimed that the current shard has failed, Rika decides to move on to the next one. Satoko finds her corpse shortly after and briefly taunts her before following suit.

The end of HigurashiThe “Demon Revealer” arc offers viewers a complete picture from Rena’s perspective along with Satoko’s role in the tragedy. It will take some time before Sotsu arrives at the events of From Gou The “Fool the Cats” arc, but seeing Satoko so nonchalantly sabotaging her friends certainly doesn’t paint her sympathetically. The next “Cotton Reveal” arc could look very similar, with From Sotsu Retelling the “Curse-Deception” arc is a potentially pivotal moment for Satoko’s character in the future.
