Sonic Colors: Ultimate can only reach 30 FPS on Nintendo Switch

A recently updated trailer reveals that Sonic Colors: Ultimate will only be able to run at 30 FPS, despite an earlier announcement at 60 FPS and 4K.

Despite initial claims to the contrary, Sonic Colors: Ultimate it will only be able to run at less than 30 FPS in Nintendo switch. In May, Sega announced an HD update to the 2010 Wii classic, which was hailed as a promising return to the Blue Blur form after a long and divisive display throughout the 2000s.

In addition to the expected graphical update that comes when a game is remastered, Sonic Colors: Ultimate promises to add a host of new features such as a “Rival Rush” mode that pits Sonic against his evil robotic doppelganger Metal Sonic, collectible Park Tokens that will allow players to purchase new upgrades, shoes and gloves to customize their hypersonic hedgehog, and a handy “Tails Saves” feature that will guide players in trouble to a safe area in case they get overwhelmed. This is all pretty exciting for fans of the colorful game of Sonic through Dr. Eggman’s twisted interstellar amusement park, but the previous promise of 60 FPS might have been a mistake from the start.

Earlier today, Nintendo released an updated trailer for Sonic Colors: Ultimate to Youtube. This one is virtually identical to the one shown earlier this week, with one seemingly small but significant alteration: at the beginning, the text box promoting the “60 FPS, renewed lighting, improved graphics and 4K resolutionNow you have the references to 60 FPS and 4K removed. This implies that Sonic Colors: Ultimate It will only run at 30 FPS, which is the standard for the Nintendo Switch anyway, as long as the long-standing rumors about a Nintendo Switch Pro with 4K capabilities are false.

Sonic is going to have a busy year as Blue Blur celebrates 30th anniversary in 2021. Apart from the launch of Sonic Colors: Ultimate, Sega is currently working on a new Sonic title that is rumored to be something of a reboot for the long-running franchise. Sonic also made rounds as VTuber and a Minecraft DLC mask in recent months, and there are linked media focused on hedgehogs like the Sonic prime Netflix and the highly anticipated sequel to its hit live action movie in the works.

Weather Sonic Colors: Ultimate it won’t run in 4K after all, the new remaster still looks pretty impressive. It is not clear why Sega would promote 60 FPS for Sonic Colors if it wasn’t going to include it, but the initial trailer might have had a typo, or Sega is planning another update for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, or even the one mentioned above. Nintendo switch Pro (if it really existed). In either case, players will be able to take off with their favorite spiked marsupial when Sonic Colors: Ultimate launches September 7.
