The Black Widow writer originally wrote a longer post-credits scene

Black Widow screenwriter Eric Pearson revealed that he initially wrote a much longer post-credits scene for the film that had much more dialogue.

Screenwriter Eric Pearson originally wrote a much longer post-credits scene for Black widow. Although the MCU’s last theatrical entry served as Scarlett Johansson’s final exit as Natasha Romanoff, the film also took the time to introduce a host of new characters, some of whom may appear in future MCU projects. At least one has been confirmed to appear again this year, with Florence Pugh confirmed to be returning as Yelena Belova in this year’s Disney + series. Hawkeye. For those who have seen Black widowIt’s clear that the post-credits scene is shaping this look in a surprising way.

Although most of Black widow takes place between Captain America: Civil War Y Avengers: infinity war, the movie’s post-credits scene moves forward in time. Yelena is seen after the events of Avengers Endgame, visiting Natasha’s grave somewhere in Ohio. What should be an emotional moment is interrupted by the presence of Julia Louis Dreyfus’s Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine blowing her nose unceremoniously. That’s when the Contessa sends Yelena on her next mission, revealing that not only has the upcoming Black Widow been working for Val for some time, but Yelena will come across a familiar face in Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton.

While the scene is quite brief, Pearson said Collider that the original version of the stinger was written to be much longer. When the screenwriter learned that Pugh would be acting opposite Dreyfus in the scene, Pearson wrote five pages of dialogue. Pearson says he couldn’t resist seeing Yelena and Val go head-to-head. “bouncing dialogue“from each other. In the end, most of that was cut for a short but sweet post-credits scene that sets up the future of Yelena’s MCU.

I just know that I was told that we have plans to introduce this character, Valentina, and that she will be played by Julia Louis Dreyfus. And I couldn’t get to the computer fast enough. That scene on the label was probably about five pages long because I was so greedy. I was like, I want Yelena and Valentina to come and go, exchanging dialogues with each other. And ultimately that will never happen. You’re not going to have a whole scene like a stinger at the end. So we opted for the smaller version, but I was so excited to bring those two actors together, to put those two character dynamics together. And I also love taking an emotional moment, like Yelena at the grave, and then flushing it down the toilet with Valentina blowing her nose.

With actresses of the caliber of Pugh and Dreyfus, it’s no wonder Pearson wanted to milk the scene for all it was worth. Of course, Marvel likes their post-credits scenes to be short and Black widowis no different. Val shows up and gives Yelena her next assignment, sending her after the person she claims is responsible for Nat’s death. Of course, the public knows that’s a bit of a lie, but Yelena doesn’t know and the scene will send her to. a collision course with Clint Barton when Hawkeye launches later this year.

So far, Yelena’s role in Hawkeye it was one of the many mysteries surrounding the series. Now, however, it is clear that she will appear as an antagonist of the main character, clashing with him and with Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop. Fortunately, although Pearson wanted to see more of Dreyfus and Pugh in Black widow, it certainly won’t be the last time the two of you are together. It seems both actresses are in the MCU for the long haul and seeing them interact will be a treat in future Marvel projects.
