The new Mass Effect is a sequel to BOTH the original trilogy and Andromeda.

Now that Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, a compiled remastering of the first three entries in the epic sci-fi RPG series, has finally landed, all eyes are on the next novelty. Massive effect entry. The fate of the franchise’s future has long been under speculation since the lukewarm and disappointing reception of Mass Effect: Andromeda, a spin-off destined to launch a new era for the series. Plans for a direct sequel to Andromeda turned off, but the trailer for this new Massive effect showcased during the 2020 Game Awards broadcast, he deliberately hinted that it will connect to both the original trilogy and Andromeda.

Fans have been breaking the Massive effect teaser on social media and I have received confirmation from the BioWare developers that their suspicions are correct. The opening shot of the trailer shows two galaxies, our Milky Way and the (relatively) nearby Andromeda galaxy. This has huge ramifications for what the new entry will focus on, and the trailer may have hinted at how they are connected as well.

The original Massive effect The trilogy focused on the adventures of Commander Shepard, a human who becomes instrumental in shaping the fate of the Milky Way. Interstellar travel in the Milky Way was accelerated with the discovery of the Mass Relays, a network of gigantic alien devices capable of launching ships across the vast distances of space. No one knew who built the Mass Relays, but when humanity discovered them, they were thrust into a larger society made up of many sentient alien races.


As the youngest member of the interstellar community, humanity had much to prove and Commander Shepard became one of humanity’s leading representatives. The Mass Relay Network focused on a massive structure called the Citadel, built by the same mysterious aliens responsible for the relays. The Citadel was the center of civilization in the Milky Way, and the original Massive effect The trilogy largely revolved around the politics involved in the human race earning its place there and landing a seat on the ruling council of the Citadel.

Originally, the relays and the Citadel were believed by many to be the result of the efforts of the long-deceased Proteans. But Shepard discovered a much more sinister truth and a threat that could wipe out all life in the galaxy. The relays and the Citadel were actually built by a sinister race of sentient machines that the Proteans called Reapers.

The Reapers, each large enough to serve as a spaceship, built the network and the Citadel to be found intentionally. When enough sentient races had achieved sufficient technological advancement, the Reapers would return from the darkest reaches of space to destroy all advanced life, leaving only the primitives to survive and repeat the cycle. The Reapers were the cause of Prothean’s destructions millennia before the original trilogy. Commander Shepard led a crusade to ensure this pattern of death and destruction did not repeat itself.

Mass effect 3 presented multiple possible takeaways from the war, but regardless of Shepard’s choices, the Reapers are defeated using a superweapon called the Crucible, designs whose designs date back to the first species eradicated by the Reapers and enhanced with each passing cycle. Humanity would be the first to successfully build the Crucible, releasing energies that damaged or destroyed the Mass Relays, the severity of which depended on the chosen ending.

Little is known about the long-term effects of Shepard’s decision, except that life continued to exist and Shepard’s actions have become legend. This ending left the franchise in a strange place, with little chance of a direct sequel occurring that resembled the one. Massive effect the fanatics of the universe had come to know. That turned out to be the main influence on the decision of the direction of future entries that resulted in Mass Effect: Andromeda.

AndromedaThe story really begins between Mass effect 2 Y 3 and revolves around the joint colonization effort of the Citadel races. The Andromeda Initiative was intended to launch six massive ships called Arks on a one-way trip to the neighboring galaxy, although only four are known to have been launched (the arrival of the fifth Ark was planned for DLC that was never produced). The occupants of the Arks remained in suspended animation, only to be awakened upon arrival. Of course, things don’t go according to plan.

Players take on the role of Ryder, a settler who takes on the role of Pathfinder after his father’s death and is charged with finding habitable worlds to settle in. Arriving in the year 2819, roughly 630 years after the original trilogy, Ryder discovers that none of the worlds the Andromeda Initiative planned to settle turned out to be what they needed. Additionally, when Ryder arrived at the Andromeda Heleus Cluster, they became embroiled in a war between two native alien races, the wary Angara and the vicious Kett.

Ryder’s Ark can only make contact with one of the other Arks, the flagship Nexus, which was designed to be the base of operations for the Andromeda Initiative and intentionally modeled after the Citadel. The Nexus is in disarray, short of supplies and personnel due to a lack of Arks and almost on the brink of collapse. Ryder becomes involved in aiding Angara’s resistance against the Ketts as he searches for the lost Arks and habitable worlds to colonize.

Ryder discovers a new synthetic race called Remnants built by the long-deceased Jardaan. The Remnants were in charge of Jardaan’s massive terraforming technology. They remained mostly inactive since the Scourge, an apocalyptic event that released energy that destroyed the Jardaan and was the reason why the colonial worlds envisioned by the Andromeda Initiative were damaged beyond the room. Next, Ryder must face the Archon of the Kett in a battle to secure the Meridian, a planet-sized device capable of activating Remnant’s vaults and launching the terraforming of many worlds.

Ryder defeats the Archon and establishes humanity on Meridian, activating it and actually beginning the Andromeda Initiative’s colonization efforts. Dyed Andromeda been a major commercial and critical success, subsequent sequels would have followed Ryder’s continued efforts. But that was not the case, and all Massive effect has been in limbo so far.

By showing both galaxies in the new trailer, it is clear that this new, separate Massive effect The game will seek to unify both arms of the franchise, which is not unthinkable. If the new game is established after Andromeda, then centuries have passed, perhaps long enough that the Milky Way can restore the Mass Relays and reconnect with each other. They may even have advanced far enough that traveling between the two galaxies no longer requires more than half a millennium and suspended animation to achieve.

Narratively, there’s a chance to connect the games through pre-existing characters, and the trailer may have already hinted at who might return. The trailer shows a woman digging in the snow, finding a piece of armor bearing the N7 logo, Commander Shepard’s elite designation. The woman is revealed to be an Asari, a race of aliens of a single gender and an extremely long life. Asari is known to have lived over a thousand years, and the one shown in the trailer looks suspiciously like Liara T’Soni, one of Shepard’s companions from the original trilogy.

Given that she was just over 100 years old in the original trilogy, it is entirely plausible that Liara is still alive during the events of Andromeda. She was also an archaeologist and scientist who eventually exerted a significant influence on the Milky Way after taking the mantle of Shadow Broker from her predecessor. There are so many unknowns in this recently announced game, but a character like Liara would be an ideal choice to help bring the two together. Massive effect galaxies and help forge a new path forward for the beloved franchise.
