Thunderbolt Ross takes on Black Widow

Black Widow William Hurt Thudnerbolt Ross

Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross helps boot Black widow going after Natasha Romanoff following the events of Captain America: Civil War. She then reappears near the end of the movie, after Natasha destroys the Red Room and tells her family to escape without her. In the first trailer, there is a shot of Ross arriving with a group of soldiers and a caravan of trucks that appears to be part of this ending sequence. However, in the finished movie, the scene ends before Ross and his team arrive at the crash site to confront the Black Widow.

Natasha and Yelena meet again

Black Widow Florence Pugh Yelena Belova 1

Although the reunion between Natasha and her sister, Yelena Belova, unfolds in the same way as in the trailers, with the two sisters fighting before calling for a truce, there are a couple of differences. After their fight ends, Natasha says, “Good to see you too, sister,” while Yelena asks what brings her home. These lines are not heard in the film, and in Yelena’s case, the omission makes sense. The safe house where the scene takes place is in Budapest, which is not exactly the home of either of the sisters.

Yelena explains the role of Taskmaster

Black Widow Florence Pugh Yelena Belova 2

In multiple Black widow trailers and television commercials, Yelena has a voiceover where she explains to Natasha who Taskmaster is. She claims that Taskmaster controls the Red Room and his army of Black Widows. Right now, it also appears that Natasha is deciding to go after the villain. By contrast, the actual scene in the movie doesn’t even mention Taskmaster by name, and Yelena never says that Taskmaster is the one who controls everything. Instead, Yelena confirms that General Dreykov is the villain in charge and her daughter, Antonia, is later revealed to be Taskmaster. So it looks like these trailer lines were just a red herring.

Yelena’s version of Natasha’s story

While talking about the biological parents they never met, Yelena explains that since her birth certificate was destroyed and she doesn’t know anything, she made up her own backstory based on her undercover mission in Ohio. She tells people that Natasha moved west and became a science teacher, is married to a man who renovates houses, and has a son. In the trailers, Yelena adds to this story by saying, “You’re thinking of moving, but you’re going to wait until interest rates drop.” This funny detail did not reach the final cut.

The red guardian struggles to get out of the prison

Black widow finds Alexei Shostakov in prison, until his two pseudo-daughters take him out to help in the search for the Red Room. While Alexei can show his super strength in this sequence, he has a bit of trouble once he comes out, as he is followed by a crowd of guards and prisoners. Rather, the trailers show him taking on some guards in a fight that doesn’t appear to be in the movie.

Alexei flexes his muscles

David Harbor as Alexei Shostakov / Red Guardian in Black Widow.

After the family reunites at Melina Vostokoff’s house, Alexei goes to the bathroom to put on her Red Guardian costume. Before dressing up, the trailers show him posing and flexing his muscles in front of the mirror, a moment that didn’t make the finished movie. Also, once he gets dressed and introduces himself to his supposed wife and kids, Melina comments on Alexei’s weight gain. His answer that “it is mainly the weight of the water” is removed from the film.

Melina explains the plan

Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff in Black Widow.

In the Black widow TV commercial titled “Fight”, Alexei and Melina have escaped from their cells in the Red Room and Alexei asks what his plan is. Melina explains that “we only had time to plan until now”, which implies that they have already overcome their initial plan, to Alexei’s surprise and confusion. In the movie, however, the scene cuts to a flashback, in which it is revealed that Melina and Natasha came up with a plan and this was all part of it.

The black widow is done running away from her past

Several trailers included a voiceover of Natasha saying, “I’m done running away from my past,” a sentence indicating that fans would finally find out more about Black Widow’s backstory. While she delivers on that front, Natasha never says this line in the movie. Since it was a key part of the marketing, the line may have been registered specifically for trailers, or maybe it was just cut off for time.

Directed by Cate Shortland, Black Widow stars Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbor as Alexei Shostakov / Red Guardian, OT Fagbenle as Mason, and Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff. The movie is in theaters and on Disney + Premier Access now.
