In the latest issue of Excalibur from the X-Men, Gambit gets an updated deck of throwing cards, revealing a new type of power set for him to use.

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Excalibur # 22

In the last issue of the X-Men Excalibur, By Remy Lebeau Gambit just got a whole new set of powers thanks to some updated launch cards. While Remy’s mutant ability allows him to charge any inanimate object with an explosive amount of kinetic energy, he most often uses throwing cards to serve as explosive projectiles while using a metal staff for close combat. However, his latest adventure with Excalibur sees the team trying to infiltrate Merlyn’s tower, and Gambit’s new and improved cards certainly elevate him as a much stronger asset to the team than he already was.

On Excalibur # 22 From writer Tini Howard and artist Marcus To, the great wizard Merlyn comes to the Starlight Citadel to declare his dislike for mutants, whom he refers to as a “race of witches.” Not only that, but she also criticizes Lady Saturnye and her omniversal guardian status (a role that Saturnyne somehow took from her in the past). Once Merlyn leaves, Saturnyne requests that Captain Britain and Excalibur find out what Merlyn has that gives her the confidence to declare war on the Citadel and the mutants at the same time.

As a result, Excalibur soon finds himself in the heart of Merlyn’s tower, trying to figure out what exactly the old wizard has planned. As they begin in their dungeons, they soon make their way to Merlyn’s chambers and their first real challenge is the magical lock that locks the door. This is where Gambit comes in with its new and improved cards, though they’re not really the cards you’re used to throwing. Instead, he stole them from a certain someone whose cards have an added kick beyond the impressive explosions that Gambit can produce on his own.

Gambit-Tarot Cards

Thanks to Saturnyne’s tarot cards, it seems that each card offers a new ability for Remy to use. For example, throwing the “Luck” card opens the doors to Merlyn’s chamber. While this is certainly impressive, it seems like this is just the beginning of Gambit’s new set of powers. One has to wonder what will happen when and if he casts the “Wizard” card. Will you get magical abilities for a while? If he casts the “Strength” card, will he get stronger? It’s a lot of fun thinking about the possibilities.

Regardless, Gambit has just become a major power player for Excalibur, although we hope he doesn’t have to return his powerful new deck to Lady Saturnyne every time they return to Starlight Citadel. It’s a very good update, and it would certainly be a shame to see it disappear as a temporary ability that only lasts for a few issues. No matter, Gambit has always been a fan favorite member of the X Men, and this number does a great job of showing that there is plenty of room for the character to grow and develop even more, especially with his awesome powers.
