A branch of the Japanese government has designated the Pokémon Vaporeon as the mascot for a day that promotes clean water conservation.

Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has chosen Pokemon Vaporeon as the ambassador for the upcoming “Water Day”, an event based on awareness of water resources and conservation.

Vaporeon is just the latest pocket monster in Nintendo’s perennially popular franchise that was recruited by the Japanese government to promote special events and causes – its companion water-type Pokémon Lapras is the mascot of the Miyagi prefecture public transportation system, while The Pokémon Company and the city of Yokohama come together annually to organize a “Pikachu Outbreak” festival to encourage tourism in the area. It should be noted that the new “Water Day” promoted by Vaporeon is a different event than the Day of the Sea, a Japanese national holiday that celebrates the ocean and the resources it brings to the country and its people.
