Sony Pictures Animation’s The Mitchells vs. The Machines is now the most-watched Netflix original animated film released so far.
Based on recently released Netflix viewing data, The Mitchells against the machines is now the most viewed Netflix original animated movie.
Term reports that in the first 28 days of the movie on Netflix, The Mitchells against the machines it was seen in 53 million member households worldwide. To compare that number to statistics for previous Netflix original animated movies from their first 28 days, On the moon was seen in 43 million homes, The Willoughbys in 38 million households and Klaus in almost 30 million homes.
It’s worth noting that the viewing statistics reported by Netflix are not a reliable metric of how many people watched all or even most of a movie. Since 2019, the audience figures reported by Netflix are based on the number of accounts that watched a minimum of two minutes of a certain movie or TV show. This most likely means that the number of households that viewed The Mitchells against the machines as a whole it is almost certainly less than the 53 million figure
The Mitchells against the machines, produced by Sony Pictures Animation and directed by Gravity Falls‘Michael Rianda, was originally going to be released by Sony Pictures in theaters under the title of Connected. The COVID-19 pandemic forced the film to move its release date from September 19 to October 23 to completely disappear from Sony’s release schedule. It was eventually sold to Netflix, which released the film on April 30 under its original working title of The Mitchells against the machines. It went on to be one of the best-reviewed movies of 2021 thus far with a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Sony Pictures Animation has released more Netflix movies since The Mitchells against the machines, including Chinese co-production I wish Dragon. The following for Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation is Alive, a musical starring and with songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Beginning in 2022, Netflix will have exclusive first-window streaming rights for all new Sony Pictures theatrical releases, and Disney will get the rights after the Netflix window ends.
Now streaming on Netflix, The Mitchells vs. the Machines stars Abbi Jacobson, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Mike Rianda, Eric André, and Olivia Colman.
