Aliens: Fireteam Elite may be drawing the attention of fans of the franchise, the game also reinforces character progression which should be a genre standard.

Cold Iron Studios recently gave CBR a hands-on preview of Aliens: Fireteam Elite, and while there are a lot of great things to say about the entire package, the game’s character progression could be what steals the show. The addition of weapon accessories, obtaining new cosmetics and adjusting the skill load add an additional element to the cooperative survival shooter that is missing in its contemporaries.

Aliens: Fireteam Elite is a third person survival shooter that pits a team of colonial marines against swarms of xenomorphs and other enemies of the Alien universe. The title plays similarly to games like Left 4 Dead or Vermintide with its special enemy variations and scenario-based design.

Character progression and customization is the highlight of Aliens: Fireteam Elite. Players can customize everything from their appearance to their weapons to the accessories they have on their weapons. Most alterations are purely cosmetic, like a change of clothes or a fancy new weapon decal, but weapon accessories actively change weapon stats. They physically alter the appearance of the chosen weapon while also adding things like more stability or the ability to make bullets stagger enemies.

In addition to customizing the equipment, Aliens: Fireteam Elite has a unique skill system. Players are given a grid on which to place skills, and as they rank up in the selected class, the grid will gradually gain more spaces, taking on a rectangular shape. The size of each ability varies depending on how powerful it is, and some must be placed in specific locations for them to function properly. When players start, choosing a skill will turn into a puzzle minigame. Skills will get easier to work with on the grid as they level up, but the size variations mean that any significant changes require a little tweaking. It’s a welcome and engaging break from the non-stop action. Aliens: Fireteam Elite offers for the rest of the game.

Together, the progression and customization options help Aliens: Fireteam Elite Stand out and give players something to work on every time they play. Vermintide Y World War Z They both have some customization options, but these pale in comparison to what Elite fire team introduces players. World War Z It has perks that players can choose from based on their character class and weapon customizations that are unlocked as players level up. Vermintide allows players to alter their characters’ armor and weaponry in a manner somewhat similar to Elite fire team, but your cosmetic options are not that detailed.

Aliens: Fireteam Elite allows players to experience the best of character progression. They can search for new armor and gear upgrades, alter the appearance of their gear, and further develop their characters with a rewarding skill system. A system like this should be the standard for the genre. The industry has long passed the era of a basic cooperative survival shooter. Players expect something they will want to return to session after session, and what better quest than to slowly create a dream character?
