Black Adam director Jaume Collet-Serra compares Dwayne Johnson’s performance as the villain turned antihero to Clint Eastwood in Dirty Harry.

Black adam director, Jaume Collet-Serra, compares Dwayne Johnson’s performance to Clint Eastwood in Dirty Harry. After working together at Disney’s Jungle cruise, Johnson recruited Collet-Serra to direct Black adam—Who is expected to redefine the hierarchy of power in the DC Extended Universe and spearhead its next chapter. Johnson has been linked to the antihero Teth-Adam / Black Adam for nearly a decade, and after a rejected cameo in Shazam!, will finally be featured in an origin movie that will be released in 2022.

Any plans by Johnson, one of the biggest stars working today, to make a cameo in other DCEU projects was scrapped in favor of a definitive debut as Adam, one of the most powerful characters in all of DC history. Adam is an Egyptian slave who is granted superpowers by the ancient wizard Shazam. Despite starting out with intentions to free those enslaved by dictators, Adam’s hunger for power leads him to become a tyrant himself, positioning him as the superhero Shazam’s arch nemesis and eventually an antihero. It is unclear how much of this mythology Collect-Serra’s film will adapt.

In an interview with Variety, Collet-Serra spoke about working with Johnson on Jungle cruise Y Black adam. Citing his lack of comic book knowledge and his growth in iconic ’80s movies, the director described Black adam As the “the most complex puzzle of [his] career. With that said, Collect-Serra talked about subverting the expectations associated with Johnson’s personality by comparing his version of Adam to Eastwood’s Dirty Harry. Read what Collect-Serra had to say below:

Having done a romantic comedy adventure in which he is very light, I was very drawn to the dark version of Dwayne. Basically turning him into Clint Eastwood in a western. I was like, ‘You’re like the dirty Harry of superheroes,’ ”he said. “I didn’t have to convince people that I was the right fit for this the same way I did for ‘Jungle Cruise.’ It’s like the things I’ve done with liam [Neeson], that tough antihero with a heart. The world is not black and white. The world is in gray areas, so you need these people who travel in that gray area.

DC fans will probably be pleased with this comparison. Given the reaction to Zack Snyder’s much darker cut from League of Justice (as well as the success of DC companies like The Dark Knight Trilogy), Black adam It should be a step in the right direction for the seemingly aimless DCEU. Johnson himself has expressed the wish that his Adam collide with Henry Cavill’s Superman and is rumored to support the restoration of SnyderVerse, arguably the perfect sandbox for a superhero comparable to Dirty Harry.

Black adam officially finished filming last week and will also present Pierce Brosnan, Aldis Hodge, Noah Centineo, and Quintessa Swindell as members of the Justice Society of America. It seems likely that the main character clashes with these heroes, as they facilitate Adam’s redemptive bow. With the DC FanDome taking place this fall, fans should get some kind of first look (maybe even a trailer?) In the coming months.
