Throughout the ten seasons, Friends it was full of various plot twists. However, not all of them managed to surprise the audience and they ended up seeming almost obvious rather than unexpected, particularly when it comes to the ongoing relationship between Ross and Rachel.
But while not surprising, some of these twists were necessary to test a character (like Chandler cooling down before his wedding) or to help him move on (Joey missing his big break is a factor in reconciling with Chandler) . Others were simply destined to happen and everyone knew it.
10 Monica and Chandler get together
Although Chandler and Monica have one of the most interesting relationships on the series, the union of the two was not the most surprising twist. There were times when the two seemed pretty close in previous episodes, like their tender moment in ‘The One with the Flashback’ and Chandler trying to convince Monica that he was a good boyfriend on the beach house vacation.
So when these foreshadowing scenes are taken into account, their burgeoning relationship is less shocking than it should be.
9 Joey and Rachel’s relationship
When womanizer Joey fell in love with Rachel, it was unexpected and a bit heartbreaking. But when Rachel later developed feelings for Joey, it was inevitable that they would end up dating.
Throughout the show, Rachel always ends up in a relationship with the person she currently likes, even if it’s only for an episode or two. And although they were already good friends, Joey was no exception. And considering their closeness as friends and Ross and Rachel’s relationship, it was also inevitable that they would part as well.
8 Marcel is the monkey Moonshine
One of the sweetest plot twists early in the show was Ross’s brief reunion with his beloved pet monkey Marcel. Although it’s a relatively small plot twist, it’s no less predictable.
By the time ‘The Moonshine Monkey’ appears in a television commercial at the beginning of the episode, the audience knows that it is Marcel. It would be too much of a coincidence to include and focus on a monkey identical to Marcel at first, and then not Marcel.
7 Janice and Chandler breaking up forever
In the previous series, Janice served as Chandler’s on-and-off girlfriend until they finally rekindled their romance properly in season 3. However, this relationship was destined to end.
Considering Chandler’s past with Janice and how he felt about her before, it seemed unusual that he was actually happy to be in a relationship with her. So while it’s a sad moment, it wasn’t a huge surprise when Janice decides to give her marriage another chance, ending their relationship for good.
6 Ross being the father of Rachel’s baby
For Rachel to find out she was pregnant is perhaps one of the biggest plot points on the show. But finding out that her baby’s father was Ross wasn’t a surprise at all (Tag was even put on as a red herring before it was revealed).
Since Rachel wasn’t dating anyone at the time, it couldn’t have been anyone other than Ross. In fact, it would have been an unexpected plot twist if someone else but Ross was the father.
5 Richard admitting that he still loves Monica
Richard and Monica were clearly in love when they were together. The only reason they broke up was because they wanted different things at the time, and it took a long time for both of them to get over each other. So what better way to get in the way of Chandler’s proposal that was perhaps going too well?
Despite the predictable plot twist, as one of the most beloved supporting characters Richard finally has to let go of Monica is still quite sad to witness.
4 Chandler disappearing before his wedding
Before being with Monica, Chandler used to express fear of commitment in relationships. So when Chandler cools off and disappears on the morning of their wedding, it feels somewhat expected, as it’s more of a reminder of his character’s fears than a surprising plot twist.
But while it’s one of the more predictable plot twists, this is a moment that shows great growth in Chandler’s character, further cemented when he disappears again to buy a gift for the baby he thought Monica was going to have.
3 Ross and Emily’s marriage fails
The whirlwind of Ross and Emily’s romance was doomed from the start. Their relationship and marriage were rushed, and Rachel wasn’t happy about it from the start, especially since Emily was (understandably) mad at her on their first meeting.
So seeing their marriage end almost as quickly as it started was no surprise, nor did Rachel travel to London in an attempt to stop the wedding. However, how it ended is perhaps one of the biggest bombs in the show.
2 Joey is cut off from the days of our lives
At the height of his career, Joey landed a recurring role on Days of our lives sleeping with the casting director, so it seemed strange to see Joey’s career running smoothly after years of fighting.
It is when Joey moves in after fighting with Chandler that intervention is requested to mend their friendship. So while it was expected to kill Dr. Drake Ramoray, it wasn’t unpleasant. Not only did getting cut off give Joey that extra push to make amends with Chandler and come back, it makes his return to the soap opera more deserved.
1 Rachel getting off the plane
Of the final plot twists in the last few episodes, Rachel getting off the plane is the least surprising and possibly the most disappointing.
Although the series did its best to build a possible ending in which Rachel and Ross don’t get together, it was absurdly obvious that it would never be like this. Still, it might have been better to see Rachel’s character growth rewarded with a dream job she worked so hard to achieve.
