Golden kamuy tells the story of Saichi Sugimoto, a veteran of one of the bloodiest battles of the Russo-Japanese War, who is traveling the island of Hokkaido, in northern Japan, in search of a legendary treasure of gold hidden by the indigenous Ainu from the earth. Sugimoto teams up with a vengeful young woman, Asirpa, whose father was one of the Ainu miners who originally discovered gold before he was betrayed. The two travel through Hokkaido, unraveling clues to the gold’s location as they battle other treasure hunters and opportunists who want to take the gold for themselves.
Golden kamuy It began publication in 2014 and has received near-universal critical acclaim for its depiction of the lasting effects of the war and its portrayal of the Ainu people. The series was adapted into an anime by Geno Studio, which is one of the anime production companies that was chosen by Lucasfilm to contribute to their next Star Wars: Visions anime anthology. The anime ran for two seasons in 2018 and was given a third season in 2020.
