A24 has released the official trailer for their next horror offering, mutton. Set in rural Iceland, mutton is about a farming couple (Noomi Rapace and Hilmir Snær Guðnason), who mourn the loss of their son and make a shocking discovery. While the first one-minute trailer, which came out last month, barely revealed anything, this latest trailer is absolutely insane. Featuring a half-human, half-lamb creature walking on two legs while holding its “father’s” hand, the trailer has spooked many viewers. But with The Beach Boys’ “God Only Knows” playing in the background, the trailer only hints at what’s to come: disturbing, idiosyncratic body horror.
The official synopsis revealed for the film is as follows: “A childless couple in rural Iceland makes an alarming discovery one day in their sheep stable. They soon face the consequences of defying the will of nature, in this dark, and atmospheric”.
Noomi rapace, who plays Maria in the film, signed on after being impressed by the originality of the script. She said in 2019: “A script like this is rare and I felt directly that I had to do it. I’ve never done anything like this before and I can’t wait to start filming and get back to my roots in Iceland.”
mutton it debuted in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2021 Cannes Film Festival and won the Originality Prize. Initial reviews have compared the atmospheric horror of mutton to A24’s The witch Y Hereditary. For whatever reason, the movie has also received some Biblical comparisons. The two-minute-long trailer is still pretty subdued, as it doesn’t reveal what’s actually going on in the movie, but it does reveal some spoiler details. In the trailer, Maria yells at a sheep to “go away”, prepares a bath for the lamb-human hybrid, gives it milk from a bottle, and puts it to sleep in a crib. Noomi Rapace, best known for Prometheus and the Swede, The girl with the dragon tattoo trilogy, starring in the title role alongside Hilmir Snær Guðnason (101 Reykjavik). Björn Hlynur Haraldsson (Netflix Caught Y The Wizard) also stars in the movie. Director Valdimar Jóhannsson co-wrote mutton with Sigurjón Birgir Sigurðsson, also known as Sjón, a renowned Icelandic novelist, poet and lyricist. Jóhannsson has previously worked in the visual effects department on films such as Rogue One, Game of Thrones, Y Prometheus. Even if mutton is his first feature film, Jóhannsson has received praise for his directing and ability to maintain a unique tone throughout the film.
