In an interview with ColliderVikander was asked about the film’s progress and if the sequel was still happening. “Yes,” Vikander confirmed. “Pre-COVID, I would have said yes. And now I think it’s a yes yet. There is no green light, but the script is in the works. And I think everyone is excited, and I would love to visit Lara again.” Vikander also pointed out that the script progress was something new and not something that had been in development for a while. “It’s very recent. It’s really now that the world is up and running again, and Misha is on board and working on the script right now. So I’m very excited to read something very soon.”

Vikander expressed interest to go back to paper before the first tomb Raider I’d even pitched in, suggesting that if there was an audience for the movie, she’d love to do it. The sequel was announced in September 2019, and originally hired Amy Jump and Ben Wheatley to write and direct the film, respectively.
