The era of the dragon The franchise has never made it easy to take sides in the conflict between the Magi and the Templars. Before the events of Inquisition released, the tension between the two factions reached its breaking point, resulting in a destructive war that promised to tear Thedas apart. Seeking allies against any threat that caused the tragedy in the Temple of Sacred Ashes that opened the Breach, the Herald of Andraste was given a choice between the Templars and the Magi.
“In Hushed Whispers” will be available after completing the mission “The Threat Remains” and will be available to unlock once the player has accumulated 15 power points. The recommended level for this mission is between four and seven. Once the quest has been launched, it will no longer be possible to work with the Templars, so choose carefully.
Mission: meet the wizards in Redcliffe
After starting the mission, travel to the Hinterlands and head towards Redcliffe to meet the wizards. Approaching the door outside Redcliffe, the group encounters a strange disturbance when a Fade rift opens and begins to spew demons and create temporary distortions around them. These distortions are represented by green and yellow circles on the ground, with the green circles slowing down the people entering them and the yellow circles speeding them up. Once the rift has closed, the doors open, but the Inquisition forces on the other side claim that no one expected them.
A wizard named Lysas arrives to announce that Magister Alexius is in charge, but they are free to meet the Great Charmer Fiona at the tavern while they wait for him. Travel to the tavern, where, once again, it seems that no one was expecting the Herald. Fiona claims that she has never met the player character before and has not been to Val Royeaux since before the Conclave. He also announces that the rogue wizards have pledged themselves to the Empire of Tevinter. If Vivienne is at the party and the player tells Fiona it was a mistake, they can earn her approval.
Magister Gereon Alexius and his son Felix arrive to negotiate with the Herald for the help of the magicians against the Breach. However, before negotiations can actually begin, a sick Felix runs into the Herald and hands them a secret note to meet him in the Chapel, as they are in danger. Worried about his son, Alexius leaves the negotiations and the Herald can enter the Chapel.
Mission: Go to the Chapel
Before leaving the tavern, search the building to find some codices, earn XP, and take a moment to speak with a quiet wizard named Clemence. Can be recruited by the Inquisition. There is also a wizard named Linnea nearby, and engaging in conversation with her can gain approval from Sera, Vivienne, and Cassandra if the player agrees that wizards should be controlled or disapproval if they are told that their wizards should be free.
Head outside and to the left towards the chapel. Inside the building, there is an open Fade rift and a mysterious wizard fighting demons. Join the fight and close the gap, then speak to the wizard, who introduces himself as Dorian Pavus. He proceeds to explain his relationship with Alexius and how the Magister came before the Inquisition to take over the wizards. If Vivienne is at the party and the player asks for proof of her claims, she will approve slightly. Moments later, Felix arrives to confirm Dorian’s story.
Felix notes that his father became involved with a deadly group of supremacists called Venatori, and whatever activity he has been involved in has been in an effort to reach the Herald of Andraste. If Varric is in the group and the Herald chooses the response “I am flattered,” he will slightly approve of the sarcasm. Dorian follows the Herald back to Haven, where they determine his approach to meeting Alexius, and everyone agrees that it is a trap.
Mission: Trapped in Time
From this point on in the mission, Dorian is a required squadmate, and only two others can be chosen. Arriving at Redcliffe Castle, Leliana’s agents plan to infiltrate through a secret passage in the windmill while Alexius is distracted by the Herald. While talking to Alexius, he mentions a deal he made with the Elder to heal his son, Felix. Sera, The Iron Bull, or Solas are the only squadmates who have approval options for the chosen dialogue with Alexius, so if they are not present, approval or disapproval is not earned.
When confronted by Alexius for his time magic, he will create a rift. As Dorian tries to counter-charm him, he forces the Herald and Dorian into a time portal that leads them to a dystopian future where the Elder reigns and the red lily covers everything. In the lower dungeons, the pair come face to face with two guards. Defeat them to launch a cutscene that ends with Dorian and the Herald agreeing to find out what happened.
Loot the prison guard to get the cell key and go up the stairs on the left to find a dead end with some loot. Return to the landing and take the other set of stairs, which lead to a prison area where the magician, Lysas, is contained. Interact with him before continuing to reach a cavern area guarded by enemies. Take them out and head north up the path to find the other two members of the group in the prison cells. They are disoriented, believing that the Herald was dead, but can be freed and will join the rest of the mission. Fiona can also be found in a cell, and she confirms that it is one year from the date of her meeting with Alexius.
Mission: Find Leliana
Head back to the central area with the drawbridge and take out the Venatori there before heading up the stairs to the guardhouse. There are several rooms to explore and loot in this area, and supply caches to replenish potions. Once the area has been cleared, take the stairs to the left towards the torture chambers. Fight the torturer and loot the body.
Continue forward to open the last door and launch a scene of Leliana breaking the torturer’s neck with her thighs. After releasing her, take the key from the dead torturer and head back to the barracks and the locked door on the right. This leads outside to the docks and the courtyard of Redcliffe Castle. There are enemies and open crevasses in this area that must be closed before entering the castle.
Enter the Upper Royal Wing and open the door on the right. If Connor is alive, they might find him here before committing suicide to avoid becoming an abomination. Loot the area for the diaries and the Circle of Magi banner, then head to the area with the Rift to close it. Once the demons have been eliminated and the Rift closed, open the door and head to the next area.
There is a locked door that can only be opened with five red lily shards. The player and party will have to fight enemies in the main area and climb the stairs on both sides of the room to access the upper levels and track down the bewitching enemies carrying the rest of the shards. There’s loot upstairs, as well as hidden rooms and a few Venatori fans, so use stealth whenever possible. Once you’ve collected all the shards, head back to the door to confront Alexius.
Mission: Confront Alexius and fix the time
Regardless of the dialogue options, the group will have to defeat Alexius to make up time. He is a relatively powerful mage, however he is not immune to physical attacks, so take advantage of attacks that knock him down or freeze him. Once his health drops by a third, he places a barrier and a rift opens. Deal with the demons and the rift, then focus on Alexius again. Be aware that there are temporary distortions on the ground, so be careful not to get into them. Once Alexius’s health has dropped by two-thirds, another barrier and more rifts will appear. Confront them and then finish him off. Once defeated, the Herald and Dorian can return to the present and decide how to accept wizards into the Inquisition.
Making wizards allies gets approval from Solas, Dorian, Cole (though not there yet), Varric (if Hawke sided with wizards in DA2) and Blackwall, while others will disapprove. Sera, Vivienne, Cassandra, the Iron Bull, and Varric (if Hawke sided with the Templars in DA2) approve of taking magicians prisoner. Either way, wizards are now at the disposal of the Inquisition and can help close the Rift.
