While at one point it seemed that if someone was going to be responsible for bringing Flash gordon Back on the big screen, it was going to be Seth MacFarlane considering his love for all things 80s and his use of property on Ted, but it looks like he actually will be. Thor: love and thunder director Taika Waititi dips his hand into another comic book franchise. A total of two years after being recruited to work on an animation Flash gordon movie, Jungle cruise Producer John Davis has revealed in an interview that Waititi is now working on a live action movie.
Talking to Collider in an interview that coincided with the launch of this weekend of Jungle cruiseDavis shared: “Taika is writing it. It was a movie that had a huge influence on his growth. It’s one of his favorite movies. Initially he said, ‘Let’s make it animated.’ I said, ‘Okay.’ Then we got into it and started developing it and he said, ‘No, let’s do it live.’ I said, ‘Even better.’
Attempts to bring Gordon back to life have continued since the character was referenced in Ted back in 2012, and even though Waititi has his hands full right now with a number of upcoming projects lined up, including a shift to lead a new Star Wars movies, Davis insists that the Flash gordon The project is something the director is really passionate about.
“He has the most fantastically interesting vision for this movie. And you can only know that he’s Taika. It’s what he does. It’s the way he sees the world. He’s the biggest guy in the world. He’s the funniest man in the world. And think on a different plane. And this film encompasses everything that is special about Taika and his vision. It is reminiscent of the original conception of the comics in a very interesting way, “he shared.
Davis added that the couple have been discussing the project since Thor: Ragnarok was released, which makes perfect sense considering how that movie was marketed and stylized in the same way as the sci-fi movies of the 1980s, but it was a 2016 movie called Hunting of the wild people that got Davis’s attention.
“He made this little movie in New Zealand that was crazy, that I loved it … and that’s what got me interested in it,” Davis recalled. “We sat down just to talk in general. We went to a bar together with this guy, Matt Reilly, who was an executive at Fox. We started brainstorming. And so this has been six years in the making, right? I’ve waited a long, long, long time, but his enthusiasm has remained steadfast. And only he is going to be able to direct this movie because only he should direct this movie. It’s special. “
In conclusion, Davis shared that he was happy to wait for Waititi to find a hole in his schedule to direct the film, and is confident that it will happen at some point. He said, “We’ve been through the development process, not the writing process, but you’ve presented in great detail the characters, the movie, the entry, what it’s about, the tone, all of that right? And I can’t wait. And we’ll wait for it. Hopefully we’ll get … Look, he makes a lot of movies, doesn’t he? Believe it or not, he can make a couple of movies a year. “
One thing for sure is that there are as many people as hopeful as Davis that we will see Taika Waititi’s version of Flash gordon sometime in the near future. Read the full interview at Collider.
