Daryl’s lack of a romantic life at all The Walking Dead has had viewers scratching their heads throughout the entire series. While many other characters have hooked up with someone else or at least shown a romantic interest in someone else, Daryl has firmly placed himself in the friend zone and remained single the entire time.
There seems to be a great connection between Daryl and Connie, but their burgeoning relationship was cut short due to Alpha’s machinations, which nearly left her buried alive. While that relationship might still be a possibility, it’s worth considering other potential options Daryl might have throughout the series.
Updated July 31, 2021 by Derek Draven: With the announcement of The Walking Dead season 11 hitting the airwaves on August 22, 2021, all eyes are on the fate of the characters who will see their stories finally come to an end. While it has been confirmed that some will obtain derivative titles, the rest will have to end their relationships and call it a day. One character who has seen tremendous growth over the years is Daryl, a former troublemaker who turned out to be a mainstay of the community. However, throughout the entire series, he has never had a love interest. With a number of major events taking place in season 10, you may still have a chance to love, but that remains to be seen.
10 Alpha
The thought of this romance might turn your stomach, but the unsettling facts about Alpha suggest that she is indeed capable of having a relationship, at least in some way. She even went after a sex date with Negan, presenting her as a reward for a job well done, but that could have simply been for the sake of positive reinforcement.
While Daryl would not accept such an offer, both he and Alpha live like wild cats. They are not afraid of getting dirty and dirty and they do not focus on appearances, cleaning themselves or being considered attractive. If Alpha hadn’t been a homicidal maniac, the two might have been a couple.
9 Before
Like Daryl, Jadis was a survivor, so much so that she only spoke in fragmented sentences, which suggested she was going wild. Daryl is also a man of few words, and the two could have struck a bond, had they met under different circumstances.
While Jadis seemed to like Rick, and later Gabriel, it is quite possible that Daryl would have been much more of a soul mate. Furthermore, he might have also appreciated Daryl’s no-nonsense personality and lack of hesitation when it came to fighting.
8 Beth
Arguably the one with the most romantic potential for Daryl was Beth. Left to escape on their own, they shared intimate conversations about their lives, drank together, and seemed like a sweet couple on the first date. Of course, this may also have been interpreted as a brother / sister type relationship, rather than a romantic one.
In any case, Beth’s life was cut short before anything could happen between them, beyond their strong emotional bond. Seeing Daryl leave the hospital with a dead Beth cradled in his arms remains one of the saddest and most tragic moments of the entire show. Did Daryl love Beth? Odds say yes.
7 Andrea
Andrea and Daryl were among the first of the group when the apocalypse hit. Daryl had a much larger chip on his shoulder at the time, and he was much more aggressive and prone to fits of rage. His anguish at the idea of losing Merle in Atlanta didn’t help; neither did his inability to find Sophia in season two.
On the other hand, Andrea had just dealt with the loss of her sister in a zombie attack, which left her feeling suicidal. It was Dale who convinced her to flee the doomed CDC in one of the most incredible moments of the first season, but if it had been Daryl, things could have been very different.
6 Michonne
While Michonne and Rick were definitely a Living Dead Powerful couple that fans loved, she too would have been a natural love interest for Daryl, if things had been different. They are both survivors who are not afraid to take down for the sake of their people, and that would translate into an instant bond.
The loss of Rick opened up an opportunity for the two of them to possibly bond, but that never worked out. They both became pillars of their respective communities, while Michonne still longed for Rick. When she learned that he might still be alive, she went out looking for him, effectively rejecting any potential romance with Daryl.
5 Laura
Laura was once a high-ranking savior under Negan, but after her downfall, she switched sides and joined the community. It is difficult to classify her as an evil character, as her intentions were simply to survive. The season ten finale, “Here’s Negan,” featured Laura in a flashback before the Saviors were even a thing, and she was definitely a heroic character at the time.
She and Daryl may have sparked an affair in the future, but that was not the case. The arrival of the Whisperers effectively ended any possibility of that when Beta brutally killed Laura, ending her complex character arc for good. She remains one of several characters who could really have benefited from more screen time on the show.
4 Jesus
One question that has never really been answered on the show is Daryl’s sexuality. Given this, it is quite possible that he and Jesus did it at some point.
The two started out relatively as opposites. Jesus was outgoing, personable, and good with people, while Daryl was much more of a mistrustful loner who spoke very little. If the two of you had managed to work together more often and become friends, it could have been something more.
3 Maggie
It could have been awkward for Daryl to strike up an affair with Maggie after being so close to his sister, Beth. Also, at that time, Maggie and Glenn were already married and hopelessly in love. But if Maggie hadn’t had eyes for Glenn from the start, she and Daryl could have made a great couple.
Maggie was always a strong-willed leader, but she also became a fierce warrior, over time. She and Daryl could have been perfect together, if things had been different. Unfortunately, it’s hard to see it work, given that Daryl’s actions led to one of the most brutal deaths on the entire show.
2 Connie
The only time Daryl showed anything like butterflies on his rock-hard stomach was when he was talking to Connie. Because she was deaf, Daryl had to find unique ways to communicate with her, through what little sign language he knew, as well as hand movements, expressions and, of course, childish love notes.
It’s clear that they both had a thing for each other, and that bond remains strong. After Connie’s apparent disappearance at the hands of Alpha’s scheming, Daryl searched tirelessly for her. It is now clear that Connie has survived the ordeal, which means that there is still a glimmer of hope for the two of them to find peace together.
1 Carol
Viewers have seen telltale signs that Carol and Daryl have a thing for each other since the first two seasons. Since then, they have grown together as best friends, despite many obstacles over the years. They know how to talk to each other, they would go to the ends of the earth for each other and their bond seems unbreakable.
It may be a very close friendship, but there always seems to be something more lingering beneath the surface. It’s safe to say that the window of opportunity has passed for both of them, especially given the myriad of tragic things that have happened to Carol over the years.
