According to executive producer Brad Winderbaum, Disney + ‘s What if…? It is as important to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe as any of the other Marvel Studios projects. Based on the comic book series of the same name, What if…? explores his main question by reimagining the classic MCU stories and the characters had things played out differently. For example, in the first episode of the show, Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) takes the super soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers, while in the second episode Yondu kidnaps T’Challa from Chadwick Boseman instead of Peter Quill.
When the animated series was first announced, many thought it was an anthology series that wouldn’t directly affect the MCU. Now, What if? will be released as a result of Loki, which released the Scared Timeline, established the multiverse and seemingly endless possibilities along with it. The series is narrated by Uatu the Watcher (Jeffrey Wright), a being in charge of policing the multiverse. A staggering number of MCU actors are reprising their roles in voice form for the series, which is now expected to showcase the “madness of the multiverse” and perhaps lead to upcoming movies like Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Insanity, Y Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
In an interview with Deadline, Marvel Studios Vice President of Production and Development, Winderbaum, briefly mentioned how What if…? it will affect the larger MCU. The fact that What if…? takes place after Loki makes it potentially as important (if not more) than any other story in the MCU. Read what he had to say below:
It is not a coincidence that the show resumes right after Loki. The multiple verse has exploded in every possible direction. What if…? gives us the opportunity to explore that … I think without going into great detail, I can tell you that What if…? As a project, as a story that exists in the MCU, it is as important as any other and is woven into that tapestry.
The long list of artists returning from the MCU to What if…? includes Atwell, Chris Hemsworth, Paul Rudd, Mark Ruffalo, Samuel L. Jackson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, Clark Gregg, Cobie Smulders, Danai Gurira, Don Cheadle, Emily VanCamp, Evangeline Lilly, Jeff Goldblum, Jeremy Renner, Jon Favreau , Josh Brolin, Karen Gillan, Kat Dennings, Kurt Russell, Leslie Bibb, Mark Ruffalo, Michael B. Jordan, Michael Douglas, Michael Rooker, Natalie Portman, Neal McDonough, Ophelia Lovibond, Paul Bettany, Sebastian Stan, Tom Hiddleston and the late Boseman in his final role. That said, the show’s creators went to great lengths to make the Boseman episode not only pay tribute to Guardians of the Galaxy, but also the actor’s legacy. In this way, the series should examine the past, prepare the MCU for the future, and be a crazy ride.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has said the series’ goal is to turn classic moments on their heads and feature as many MCU characters as possible from the 23 films. The series may even refer to the events of Loki or even make fun of Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors) more. Doctor Strange (Cumberbatch) is poised to play a prominent role in What if…? Episode details have revealed that the Sorcerer Supreme is facing a darker version of himself, implying that Strange from Scared Timeline may appear. It would make sense for Strange to be aware of all the branching realities that follow Loki. Leaving aside the general plots, What if…? It will adapt popular stories like Marvel Zombies and, being an animation, it will not be largely constrained by budget concerns. This really allows the multiverse to fully show itself.
