31 Days Of Horror continues in Last Movie Outpost as we go back to the 1950s and take a look at Them!
Giant atomic monsters! You have to love science fiction and post-WWII horror movies. Back then, the only thing we had to worry about besides communist world domination was radiation, which turned animals and insects into raging giant beasts. Most of those movies suck. One, however, is pretty good.
Them! It begins as a police mystery, with two police officers finding a little girl wandering down a New Mexico highway. She is so shocked that she can’t even speak. We slowly see the police trying to get to the bottom of this as they find a trailer and a general store that is wrecked while still hearing a strange sound.
One of the best in New Mexico goes out to see what that sound is and dies while emptying his service revolver. Shortly after a “Top. Man. “FBI shows up to get to the bottom of it all and finds a footprint in the sand. The government, in their wisdom, sends an insect expert to the scene. It doesn’t take long before they confirm we have a Irradiated giant ants case, guys.
Before long, the G-man and the state trooper find the ant nest and descend underground with Thompson machine guns and a flamethrower to turn those giant ants into good giant ants. Turns out it’s a bit late, as a couple of queens have hatched and blown up the coup! Yaaas slaughter of the queen!
The action then takes us to California in a tense race against time before the two queens get busy making more giant ants, before Them! comes to an end.
They invite us to an action-packed finale between the sewers of Los Angeles with the army, the feds, some cops and giant atomic ants.
Don’t let the idea of giant ant puppets from the 1950s era put you off. They don’t really look bad at all. All the ants used for the money injections are well made and state of the art for the moment.
The characters are nice. Them! is a cool mix of cop hunt and thriller mixed with sci-fi horror and the dangers of the atomic age. One thing you will notice, if you are not brain dead, is that much of this movie will remind you Aliens
If you haven’t seen this before, this is a must see.
