Someone once mentioned The midnight meat train on Twitter and when I looked it up, it had Vinnie Jones on the cover and it got top billing over Bradley Cooper. So I had some doubts about it. How wrong I was.
If you haven’t seen this gem of a horror movie, I highly recommend it! The story is simple:
A dark subject photographer’s obsessive search leads him to the path of a serial killer who stalks night travelers and ultimately kills them in the most gruesome of ways.
A serial killer on a train, right? That is just the tip of the iceberg. As the movie progresses, the story opens up in a way that I never thought it would. I won’t spoil it, but it was a very satisfying ending.
I thought Vinnie Jones was going to be a problem, but as in Gone in 60 seconds, he didn’t say much during the movie. different to Gone in 60 secondsWhen he speaks at the end, it takes away all that magic since he is not the best actor in the world.
On The midnight meat trainsays very little. Literally around 3-4 words at the end. Because of this, it is really good!
Jones looks like a hooligan, someone you would avoid crossing the street. Looks like he would kick your head if you just made eye contact with him. This is exactly why he was cast as the bad guy in this, he just looks threatening from the start.
Bradley Cooper is also very good at this. Overall, he’s good at most of his movies, but he plays the nervous guy trying to get that great photo here really well. You keep putting yourself in his place and he is braver than I would have been.
The film is directed by Ryuhei Kitamura, who I have never heard of, but his direction is excellent. The way some of the deaths are filmed is brutal and very well done. There’s a POV shot of someone having their head broken and the way it was shot was brilliant.
The story kept me guessing the whole time and I didn’t see the end coming, I love it when a movie does that. It is very well acted and very well filmed.
