How eager we had to devour the best superhero movies and series of 2021, from ‘Black Widow’ to ‘Loki’, and going through ‘The Suicide Squad’ and ‘Thunder Patrol’. And we already know: Hollywood lives on superheroes. And the world box office, too. Every year (if there is no pandemic to prevent it) movie theaters around the world are filled with spectators eager for the new film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (UCM) or the new adaptations of Dc comics, as well as, very occasionally, original superhero movies (such as’Kick ass‘OR’Hellboy‘). They are the films that lead the rankings of the most watched, those that occupy the most press headlines and gather the largest number of spectators in theaters. Now, that is also a reality in ‘streaming’, where the superhero series are also shining with their own light, either ‘Boys‘from Amazon Prime Video or marvelitas products like’Scarlet Witch and Vision‘ and ‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier‘.

Now that COVID-19 has allowed us to return to normal in the world of cinema, the most massive public has been able to buy their tickets for their most anticipated films of the year. Also hit the ‘play’ from platforms such as Netflix, Disney +, Amazon Prime Video and more, where superheroes are also making their way and making a lot of noise. And that’s why we review all the 2021 superhero movies and series one by one on this list, with their release dates and everything you need to know about them. Unfortunately, we will have to wait another year to discover the most anticipated films of 2022, but for now we have enough on our hands. What has been your favorite of the year?

Jupiter’s legacy

This is not only one of the biggest serial disappointments of the year, but also one of the worst Netflix series. Are we too tough? Well, it has been almost unanimously by all the American critics, so they are quite served. Steven S. DeKnight tried to move the comic from Mark Millar to the small screen without much success.

Release date: May 7 (Netflix)

Thunder Force

Melissa mccarthy and Octavia spencer they don superhero costumes in this film written and directed by Ben falcone. The three of us immerse us in a world where supervillains are commonplace, and these two childhood friends reunite after years of estrangement because one of them has figured out how to get superpowers so she can protect her city. Sadly, the jokes don’t work and the action is lackluster. It certainly doesn’t make our list of the best Netflix original movies.

Release date: April 9 (Netflix)

Venom: There Will Be Carnage

Tom hardy returns to play Eddie Brock, AKA Venom, who will now have to face another symbiote: the villain Cletus Kasady (‘Matanza’) whom he plays Woody harrelson. The actress Michelle Williams He also reprises his role in this film directed by Andy Serkis, and that brings the same as its predecessor: fast-paced action, somewhat silly dialogues and, above all, a lot of fun. The best thing is not to take it seriously to enjoy it as you play. Now, the best superhero movie is not, although perhaps one of the best action movies of 2021.

Falcon and the Winter Soldier

This is the most conventional of the Marvel Studios series that have amazed us this year, although there is nothing wrong with that (for something the second season of ‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ is already on its way). Just a little less interesting. They star Sam Wilson AKA Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes AKA The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), who formed a couple six months after the events of ‘Avengers: Endgame’, when Steve (Chris Evans) passes the Captain America baton to his friend Sam. This first season of the series is, basically, his conflictive process to accept and adopt the new role that has been entrusted to him. The dynamics between the two protagonists are very funny (the ‘bromance’!) And the most stellar thing has been to see the dance of Daniel Brühl.

Release date: March 19 (Disney +)

What would happen if…?

What if T’Challa had never become Black Panther, but Star-Lord? And was Agent Peggy Carter the real Captain America? What if a zombie plague had devastated humanity and made the Avengers their worst enemies? All that and much more presents this animated series from Marvel Studios: alternate settings for some of the most famous moments in the timeline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Another nod to the multiverse that is upon us in the Marvel phase 4 films, yes, but also a different and fascinating look at some of its most important characters.

Release date: August 11 (Disney +)

Black widow

Scarlett Johansson managed to debut (finally) her first solo adventure as Natasha Romanoff, better known as Black Widow. And we have had to wait more than a decade for the character to have your story, which is set after the events of ‘Captain America: Civil War’. Directed by Cate shortland, the movie has all the good stuff from Marvel movies (fast-paced action, nods to the franchise) and some plethora Florence Pugh, Rachel Weisz and David port as the “family” of Romanoff. Where would you put it in the ranking of the best Marvel movies?

Release date: July 8

Criticism of ‘Black Widow’

Oscar winner Chloé Zhao (‘Nomadland’) has signed the riskiest, most different and greatest Marvel movie. And it is perhaps that ambition that has made it, too, one of the most imperfect. His was no easy task: introducing a large new group of superheroes (played by Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Gemma Chan, Kit Harington, Kumail Nanjiani, Salma Hayek, Barry Keoghan and more) and place them in the UCM scheme having connected with the fans. Zhao does a remarkable job, and her imperfections are what make her such a special movie.

Release date: November 5th.

Review of ‘Eternals’

Zack Snyder’s Justice League

Expanded, enlarged, tuned, ‘reshooted’ and black and white version of ‘Justice League’ according to the vision (now yes) of Zack snyder. No, ‘Justice League’ of 2017, which the director had to leave for personal reasons, is not what he had dreamed of, but the destruction that his replacement carried out Joss Whedon. Is the second time the charm? It looks like it is! This new and improved cut of the film is an admirable epic, helps us better understand its characters and gives us fabulous action scenes. Although the explained ending of ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ leaves us wanting more, it seems that a sequel will be impossible.

Release date: March 18 (HBO Spain)

Make way: Kate Bishop has entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). And it will give a lot to talk about. The best archer in the world, marvelously played by Hailee steinfeld (the very definition of being born to play a role), star in these Christmas adventures alongside Hawkeye (Jeremy renner). It’s an adventure series with the most familiar Marvel formula, with lots of comedy, a cute dog, and surprises along the way. At the moment it is in this position in the ranking (the first episodes of ‘Hawkeye’ have been quite good), but how much can it rise as it reveals all its secrets and genius?

Release date: November 24 (Disney +)

Do you remember when the Avengers travel in time in search of the Infinity Stones during ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and cause the Loki (Tom Hiddleston) From ‘Avengers’ 2012 escape with the Tesseract? Well that is the starting point of this solo series of the God of Deception, who is immediately trapped by the mysterious organization called Time Variant Authority (TVA) that is dedicated to preserving the sacred timeline. This series created by Michael waldron does a great job finding depth within character, introducing wonderful new characters (we love you Sylvie!), and basically forever changing the future of the MCU. We already look forward to the second season of ‘Loki’ like May Water.

Release date: June 9 (Disney +)

Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings

Shang-Chi is one of the lesser-known superheroes in Marvel comics, created by Steve Englehart and Jim starlin in the 70s. In this film directed by Destin Cretton and starring Simu liu, the character undergoes some changes from the role and comes to us with a version according to the pillars of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (UCM): dose of action (by the wonderful Tony leung), a lot of sense of humor (helped by the presence of Awkwafina) and the promise of an exciting future for years to come within the franchise. Even so, the best thing about this film is how much it stands on its own, a model origin story that gives way to Marvel Studios’ first Asian protagonist superhero.

Release date: September 3

Review of ‘Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings’

From Marvel and DC we expect excellence, but the real superhero surprise of the year has been this Amazon Prime Video series, based on the comic by Robert Kirkman (creator, also, of ‘The Walking Dead’). The story follows Mark Grayson, a 17-year-old who inherits superpowers and becomes one of the greatest superheroes on Earth … after his own father. It will be her relationship with him that marks this violent and bloody animated series that is already among the best series on Amazon Prime Video.

Release date: March 26 (Amazon Prime Video)

Scarlet Witch and Vision

The first series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) couldn’t have been more legendary. Everything works in this great tribute to the television sitcom led by Wanda Maximoff AKA Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth olsen) and Vision (Paul bettany). In this series created by Jac schaeffer, we find them having a quiet couple life in the town of Westview after the events of ‘Avengers: Endgame’. Little by little we will discover its mysteries, which are not few, and enjoying its sense of humor and its ‘marvelita’ action. Without a doubt, one of the best series of 2021.

Release date: January 15 (Disney +)

Suicide squad

It is not a remake or a ‘reboot’, but a strange sequel to the infamous ‘Suicide Squad’ of David Yesterday which sought to reconcile DC Comics fans with the franchise. And such a way he made it! Combining some repeaters (the Harley Quinn from Margot robbie, but also Viola Davis and Joel kinnaman) with new and fun characters (¡Sylvester Stallone it’s a humanoid shark!), the filmmaker James Gunn he has achieved what seemed impossible. The result is a fast-paced, hooligan, very violent action movie with personality. Wow, one of the best movies of 2021.

Release date: 6th August
